>If you don't have optical, and only HDMI pass through you're going to end up using component (red/yellow/white), except you won't be using the yellow which is video, you'll be using HDMI. On the PS3 you'll want to set the video to HDMI and the audio to component on the audio options.

And that's the plan.
Came just about half an hour ago...plugged it in, works perfectly. Best 5 bucks I've spent in a while. Imagine my surprise when it loads and gives me a maximum resolution of 1080p! biggrin.gif biggrin.gif biggrin.gif biggrin.gif biggrin.gif GTA IV looks great, the overall image is the same, but the details that weren't there before are AMAZING. Draw distance looks improved as well...trying out GHWT and COD4 in a second.
I actually just found a button that shows me the resolution of the current screen...also found out that I'm playing games in 720p. mad.gif

When I first set it up, it gave me a max resolution of 1080p. The XMB is displayed at 1080p, but games (COD4 and GTA IV are 1080p compatible) are displayed only at 720p. Guitar Hero World Tour tops out at 720p, so could it have changed the maximum resolution to manually set to 720p? Anyway, I need to know how to change it back, or set it to 1080p permanently.
Bringing up this thread again because I just got my hdmi cable last night, hooked it up to my ps3, and it automatically set my settings to 1080p. Thing is, my tv is only supposed to be capable of 720p. Does anyone know why it's automatically setting it to 1080p? Shouldn't it recognize what the tv is capable of or do I obviosuly have to manually go in and set it to 720p. My thought is that because the hdmi cable is capable of 1080p, the ps3 thinks that's what my tv can handle. ??
Cables don't have a capability, they're just cables.

Don't know why your PS3 thinks your TV can do 1080p, the TV probably is downconverting it to 1080i. When you plug it in it should automatically read the highest possible resolution - and then display that.

Yea, that's what I am confused about, it automatically detected 1080p as my highest possible resolution. But why would the tv downconvert to 1080i when they are totally opposite display types, wouldnt it down convert to 720?
Is anyone running their ps3 through an hdmi cable on a 720p tv?
What model Panasonic TV do you have? Is it a 720p model perhaps?
It's a Philips 32" LCD. It is 720p, that's why I'm confused, I was wondering if anyone else with a 720p tv had this issue where the ps3 put the settings on 1080p automatically.
Wait a sec, in your previous post, did you say why would it go to 1080i instead of 720p? From what I know, 1080i IS 720p, so wouldn't it be doing what it should be, if your TV only supports 720p? confused.gif
My tv supports 720p and 1080i. 1080i and 720p are completely different. I am just wondering why if my tv does not support 1080p, why is my ps3 saying it's set at the resolution of 1080p.

Edit: After a bit of research, I found out the ps3 tends to do this alot. Thanks smile.gif

When you hooked up you ps3, did it automatically put the settings on 1080p?
I dont remember...i just hooked it up turned it on and went about watching movies and playing games...now im wondering if i should be checking to see if my seetings are where they should be

I'm just wondering what the display is that it's converting to since it says 1080p...is it scaling 720p up, or switching to 1080i. I think i'm just going to put it back to 720. Either way, the image looks very good....just a bit confused.
Mine said max is 1080i

let me think here the ps3 is peset at 480i rca 480p & 720p for hd, hdmi is set for 1080p but it goes by your tv and Version of your ps3. if your tv doesn't support 1080p set it for 1080i. 1080p and 1080i are the same but diff...resolution signal thats all. but its all on your tv u can have a 720p tv and run 1080p or i
