7AFE powered GO-KART! - 6G Celicas Forums

Topic #64503 26 posts Started by richee3
As several of you know, I recently parted out an ST. Well, as it turns out, the 7AFE and it's automatic transmission are in incredibly low demand tongue.gif Who knew that when someone pulled the 7AFE out that they would want to put something more powerful back in??? laugh.gif So that leaves me with a 7AFE and trans sitting in my garage. I have an uncle who happens to be an excellent welder and has a LOT of scrap metal sitting around. So after reading some of the more recent threads on here, namely the one Exterior Styling where gokarter put a rubber lip in his front bumper. Everyone starting talking about how the lip matched his name. I started thinking... Celica, go-kart... Celica, go-cart... What if I bought a few supplies, and had my uncle build me a frame (with a kick-a** roll cage hahahaha) and mount that 7AFE on it? It would be heavy, yes, but it would be the most BA go-kart in Southern Illinois. 110 HP isn't very much in a Celica, but it'd be massive overkill on a one-off go-kart. So do you guys think I should do this? And if so, how would I do it? Keep in mind that I do still have the transmission, and I'm not sure whether I should use it or not. So... Tell me!

do it. my brother in law is building his go cart with a b16 motor. he's almost done, just need to do some suspension work. should be a fun project! smile.gif
Sounds like a sick idea...probably burn rubber like crazy if you do it right.
Alright, 3 votes of yes. That's good enough for me biggrin.gif Might as well try it, right? I can always just stop what I'm doing and find something else to play with lol. I think I'll go with Stetsonaw's idea and make this my progress thread. But it may be a little bit before I get started. In the meantime, does anybody have any good ideas of how to go about doing this right? Block, you'll probably be getting a lot of PM's from me lol. And your brother-in-law is building one with a B16? That's crazy! His will definitely smoke mine when all is said and done.

Do it if you can.

Try to keep it as low tech as possible.

to get started, you need a lot of good welding lol. think of what your base go-kart will look like and start from there. my bro in law used 4" thick metal bars. he's a honda guy so he used a lot of parts from hondas to build his go-kart.
I really don't have a lot left except the motor and trans, so using Toyota parts won't really be an option for me frown.gif And already, you guys have said stuff I didn't think about, like suspension.

So how's it going to go with the transmission? I'm thinking just do a one or maybe two-speed, not like you can really tap into power if you have too many gears, that'll just result in wheel spin.

if you make it into a on-road kart you wont need suspension.

but if you make it into an off road machines i would probably source parts from an ATV. But this would make your cart building 20x more difficult.

make an outline of what you want your cart to look like. make sure you have enough room for tranny, engine, suspension, etc. you have to be think hard here and measure a lot. my inlaws had theirs built in a week. but they've slacked on the suspension plus it was cold (october). my inlaws have their b16 in the rear. looks like of like a midengine gokart haha. plus i think they made it an automatic...dont remember. ill check up on things to let you know more info
i'll have to say is you've already been pwned by the Chevy V8 bar stool

^^^ Of course I have lol. I've also been pwned by Block's in-laws. Come on, I'm using a 7A here hahahaha. It's BA as far as go-karts go, but as far as crazy go-karts go, it's pretty tame lol.

Odds are yours will come together before mine if you go for it. I'm jobless and underfunded for such an undertaking right now frown.gif plus a 5 speed go-kart would be a lot more fun lol.

I just had another thought... I have seats and seatbelts left over from the partout too. So that handles my seating arrangements, unless you guys can think of something better??? NJCCMD, my thoughts exactly biggrin.gif Maybe it won't be that great since it isn't too powerful, but my goal here is as light as possible.

No, no progress yet frown.gif I've been busy out looking for jobs ever since I got this idea, and then I got two in the same week, and a third, but that's only on certain weekends and over the summer, so it doesn't really count. So now I'm busy working and going to school all the time. Plus a setback, a big one for me because I don't really know what I'm doing, I literally just realized a couple of weeks ago that my friend didn't pull the ECU when he pulled the motor. Which is my fault for not checking, because I could have got it out myself. Now, I know that I'd rather not have an ECU on this go-kart because I would be doing some pretty stupid stuff in it and I want as little electrical as possible, but I honestly don't know anything about making that motor run without the ECU. And now that I have some money coming in, I'm planning on buying a Supra, so I don't know when I'll have money to do this. And I know how I am, so in all reality, this probably isn't going to happen anymore. But somebody can have the motor if they want to do this!

That Acura-powered kart is probably the coolest thing I've seen in two months.

supra, hmmmm, where are you getting money from... need some of that, how much for the supra

I'm getting that money from giving up my life to work two jobs, and a third on weekends and during the summer when my cousin comes back from school. I'm working 7 days a week right now, and it's kinda kicking my butt. I've been having trouble sleeping the last couple of months, but it was fine when I didn't have anything to do. Now, it's becoming a problem. I'm always exhausted. At least it's not manual labor on a daily basis, or I'd be screwed. The Supra itself is dirt cheap, as far as mkIV's go. They are asking $13,900 for it. It's an auto which sucks, and it's got 103,000 miles, but it's lower mileage than my Smellica. And better taken care of, too. It's more of a look-good Supra than a go-fast Supra, but that can be changed biggrin.gif

And point well taken on the 1,000 cc motorcycle motor with a lot less weight. I just figured I had this motor sitting around, and I have an uncle who is an excellent weldor and has plenty of scrap metal sitting around, so I was going to see what I could do with minimal money. But I'm probably just going to give up on this idea. If nobody takes this motor after I get my new car paid off, I may try and pick it back up.
