ST205 WRC Swap ST165 - 6G Celicas Forums

Topic #64534 23 posts Started by MR2Guru
In the beginning:

All of the original wiring was jacked from dry-rot and hacking from the previous owner/shop. It just made sense to me just to do a swap. :-P

The purchase:

1994 Celica GT-Four WRC. Third Generation 3SGTE. 2500 of this particular engine were built, the bare minimum production requirement for entry into WRC. If you are interested in something similar, the non-WRC is just as fun, and MUCH easier to come by.

In and out with the ol' swaparoo:

Don't try to look under her skirt.

The easy part is complete in 6.5 hours. Bolting in is just the beginning:

Bolted right in as if they were meant for each other! Minimal fab required.

The waiting game.... Wiring is fun, so until we could get caught up around the shop customer wise, she collects some dust. At least she looks really good, even just sitting.

Add 8 months and a few Coronas and Newcastles..........

3 Sets of wheels and numerous 16 hour days later....

Anyway, this is my new baby. She's been a long time in the making, but it was well worth the wait! If she is not the first actual WRC swapped 88 in the US, I am the first girl to have done a WRC swap in that generation afaik.

No flaming on this one boys, plenty of witnesses to me being completely hands-on with this project. I needed a lot of help (TY Harry) - not like he had a choice - but I cant thank him enough. We had to COMPLETELY re-wire this beast, and I own him years of backrubs to pay him off. Every bolt I couldnt break loose, everything that was too heavy, everything that was beyond my "girly skills", he was there to help every step of the way.

Mod list:

Modified engine mounts with 90A Hardness urethane filler
Fluidyne radiator from 4G63 T
Frankenstein half-shafts (ST205/ST165)
ST185 Coilover system (some fitment modification)
Synchronic BOV

MBC @ 17psi
Upgraded Heat Exhchanger for factory A2W IC system.
Lo-tec Pillar Pod with Autometer Water Temp/Boost/Oil Pressure Gauges

Apexi Turbo Timer
17" Scion tC wheels
Battery Relocation
Short Ram Intake (AEM filter)
Hand-built exhaust with custom divorced WG downpipe

She's pretty much stock, but I love her just the same!

Future plans:

SuperPro Urethane Bushing Kit
4-Wheel Alignment w/ sport tuned coilover system. (Just need them adjusted)
*Hoping for handed down GReddy 20g Turbo from one particular MR2*

Looks good, not a lot of ventilation for the I/C though?

Great swap. I love it.
Just get the whole car as well as the engine bay professionally detailed. It will really make your hard work stand out more.

I have the hood shimmed by the windscreen to help the transfer of heat, although it doesnt help much on a rainy/humid day. I have invested in Rain-X Anti Fog :-P
Since I have done this, the core stays cooler than hand temp and has helped significantly.

Indeed. Since some previous owner had a field day with touch-up paint, a good cut and buff is out of the question. I will have to reinvest in a full repaint ($$$). frown.gif

I just love the body lines and aggressive stance of the ST205 GT-Four. In my opinion, you have the next best thing!

Really nice job! Car looks great!

Sorry, no animated sigs allowed.
That's awesome! It's nice to find other girls who can do this stuff and are into this crazy male-dominated world of cars.

It would be great to meet all of you! A lot of Celica people are coming from all over the country to the April TOTD Meet, so maybe I can convince some of you to join us! We really needed more 6G cars last year, since no one came to represent (personally my favorite chassis).
Annual Tail of the Dragon Celica Meet

It would be even greater if there were more female-techies as well!

nice! What kind of coilovers are those? I want to get the new megan racing ones. also, I know you said you have an upgraded heat exchanger for the A2W IC, but it looks about stock size, I thought the ST205 heat exchanger was much bigger?

Hopefully one day mine will recieve an ST185 or 205 swap, the engine is showing it's age with a cloud of smoke on cold starts and at WOT, lol. Plus my wiring is all ^%$ed up too, seems to be a common problem for the st165. anyway, nice work, keep it up! thumbsup.gif

I'm impressed with YOUR car smile.gif WRC in a 6G GT-Four body conversion! *drool* I'm actually quite jealous wink.gif Props on the color too. I would die to see your car in person at the meet this year. *begs*

I've been having fun with mine for ALMOST two years now (2 years in April), but since I am new to 6G, I thought I would post up the story to fruition bit. Thank you all for all the compliments!

The coilovers I believe are Cusco. I actually couldnt find any badges on them, but the color combo seemed to lead me to believe so.

The picture above is older, and displays the old exchanger. The heat exchanger currently installed is actually quite a bit larger than stock. The core is 4" thick, but only measures around 12" and 9" in height/width. I did not have a 205 clip to work with in which to kidnap the 205 exchanger, but this one is cooling quite efficiently. It puts the ST165 exchanger to bitter shame.

Not only were they from a "Neon", but the offset was all kinds of wrong! LOL

I'm definitely in love. Its been so fun, its hard to convince myself to further modify it! I would have loved to have the ST205 rear diff, but maybe I will acquire that in the future. I do now have the option to bolt on the GReddy 20g, but I cant yet afford engine management so that is on hold for the time being. I cant imagine how fun it could be then!

Quick question, to those other WRC engines/cars..... Where is your fuel cut? Speed Cut? My car wont fuel cut til 20psi *shrug* I hear this should be 17-18psi. Tested 2 different boost gauges, same results. Could be due to my elevation maybe. I havent hit speed cut yet. I have had her up to 148mph (looked like 150), but never hit speed cut. Not sure if there even is one. I have yet to determine if my WRC engine is UK or JP spec.

Thanks!

You can put the 20G on now without any engine management necessary. There is plenty of power to be had going from the stock 20b to the 20g, and your stock 550s will handle the new turbo without any problems. Put it on, send it to the dyno, and turn up the boost!

As far as boost cut, mine seems to be around 20psi as well....I stated it in my swap thread, but I thought it just had to do with the map sensor not reading/sending signal to the ecu as fast as my Autometer boost gauge could read 20psi......Maybe its a WRC thing. I installed a FCD on my setup and still have to adjust it to eliminate boost cut COMPLETELY.
