Reupholstered Door Cards - 6G Celicas Forums

Topic #65347 16 posts Started by korban
The fabric at the top of my door cards was fraying and falling away, so I pulled them off and dismantled as much as I could.

From the back you can see where to undo the door handle.

From the front you can see that the material can have some overlap here.

I peeled off the old fabric and used it as a pattern on some cheap faux suede fabric I bought for NZ$6. I needed roughly 700 x 300mm to have plenty of overlap (I think actual dimensions were 650x220mm). The fabric was 1400mm wide so I only needed a 300mm strip of it.

Checking that the fabric fitted and tucked in correctly.

While holding it in place I folded half over so I could glue the center and work my way to the edges. I used some cheapo spray adhesive that dried too quickly, If I were to do it again I think 3M Spray 77 is the stuff to use. I used a flat head screw driver to work in the edges.
nice-after pics?

Right Door -

I think I got the the 'flow of the fabric upside down on the right door, so I might redo it at some stage.
Looks good, better than one of the guys on the Miata forum that did his doors in like plaid flannel lol

hmmm.... i redid my door cards a few months back... after sitting in the summer sun... the spray glue i used (3m good stuff) started to remelt and they started to peel off... hopefully yours wont do the same... i am going to try a non-spray style glue on mine...

Breaking Axles...
Had the same problem, held up fine in Maryland, got down to TX though and the glue just slopped off. Just replaced the door cards with ones that dont have fabric glued to them. Much happier now.
When I replaced the fabric on my doors (swapping System 10 door panels in my fifth-gen and I wanted the upholstery to match) I used rubber cement. It's held very well, and held for years. The one suggestion I'd have is to let the glue set in a warm but not over-heated environment with reasonable air movement, with the panel laying flat. In other words, without re-installing them immediately.

Nice Job!!!
What you guys need to use is a high temp adhesive like they use to hold headlinners up. Also make sure all of your surfaces are clean. Even a little dirt or oil will mess things up. Check out www.yourautotrim.com . You can also find lots of carbon fiber look vinyl and also faux animal prints. They have a ton of cool stuff and the prices aren't that bad either.

Never take advice from someone who is not doing better than you

OMG, how did you know?!

The company I work for just bought an '07 STi 2.5L, damn it's fun to drive. But it has this factory feel to it with the trim and race seats that I wanted to emulate.

Heh, let me know what else you're thinking of doing and i'd be glad to beat you to it smile.gif (I only did this recently anyways)
Heh, I happen to have been obsessed with GC8 imprezas before i bought by 6g smile.gif

Looks good! I actually intend to do the exact same mod, I just haven't decided on a fabric that I like yet, and I want to make sure whatever I decide on doesn't fade in the few months of sun we get here LOL
