Ok, so I am needing to clean the engine in my ST.
I need to clean it inside and out.
When I took off my throttle body, I noticed quite a lot of carbon, so I can just imagine what the intake manifold etc. look like.
Also, it has a leaky valve cover gasket(new one is on its way), and it has 190k miles on it, so it needs a good cleaning.
What do you use for cleaning the engine, such as purple power etc.?
Also, what do you recommend for cleaning the inside of the engine? I have heard mixed reviews on stuff like seafoam, b12 chemtool, etc.
What do you guys recommend?
just run good oil in it. cleaning this old of an engine might have bad effects (leaky seals, oil burning. cleaning away deposits keeping your oil in its proper place) which is why you hear bad things about seafoam and stuff.
what i do to clean the engine is buy some armor all, and go to the car wash, using the "tire && engine cleaner" or "bug remover" w/e its called there but its green, i spray the engine down really good, let it soak for a while, then spray it again, then switch over to high pressure soap, spray away at everything you see dirty, then rinse w/ the "wax" stuff. then you get the armor all and spray the WHOLE engine/bay/hoses down really well w/ the stuff. close the hood, and drive away. you will probably have a misfire, but it goes away in like 5 min of driving.
don't speay the distributor w/ any pressure. and i'm not responsible if you manage to mess something up., though i've done this for 3 years on 2 different celicas w/o an issue

Yeah. I have heard stuff like that too. I just want to get rid of the carbon build up.
When pressure washing it like that, shouldnt you cover up electrical connectors and stuff, and leave it running?
Thanks.

Do you know of anything that will clean the carbon out?
carburetor cleaner, seafoam, deep creep (aerosol can of seafoam lol) or you can take the intake mani off and clean by hand, but expect that to take all day and remember where everything goes (vaccum lines mainly)

Alright, thanks for your replies!
i like to use seafoam for the inside of the engine, 1/2 can through a vac. line and the other half in the oil...do this right before and oil change as it thins your oil out...suck it up through a vac. line while your car is running...then put the rest in your oil and shut your car off for about 10 minutes...then start it up and drive it around...its gonna smoke real bad which is a good thing because its cleaning everything out really well...the best method for cleaning the outside of the motor/engine bay is to buy a can or 2 of gunk engine degreaser...spray it over everything...becarefull of the dis. i wouldnt spray it directly on any electronics...then take a pressure washer and pressure was all the **** out...that works best for me and i have had great resutls with it
