Has it always been this way? Do you have an aftermarket shifter, such as the TRD kit?

Pop the shifter trim out and double check the shifter cables are being held in place properly. It should look like this picture:

1991 MR2 - T-tops - Crimson Red - Gen3 3SGTE - Lots of moneyI'm not really an asshole, but I play one on the internet.**** Photobucket
No "clicking" for me, more of a "crunchy thud", but there is definitely an audible sound when shifting and its not smooth at all - it takes some effort to pop into every gear but ever gear works just fine and I can still shift quickly its just not smooth. Sometimes I can get it to shift smoothly into every gear if I take juuuust the right path with the shifter...

I assumed the car was just like that... I'd LOVE to get this thing shifting smoothly!!!

Test drove an older volvo 850 for a friend... and that shifter was perfectly buttery smile.gif

Are there any other possible causes that would be worth examining?

It's like that for me too, it shifts perfectly you just don't get that buttery feeling of some other cars, I assumed its cause I'm using a cheap gearbox oil.
A good transmission fluid like Castrol Synchromesh will truly do wonders for the gearbox. It could also just be that your transmission is just worn out, but comparing to other cars isn't the right way to figure yours is bad. My subaru trans feels like a slushbox compared to my old Celicas. I miss the notchy feeling.

When it shifts without any funny noises, I really like that I can feel it going into gear.

I test drove an 89 civic with a 5 speed... it was "smooth" sure, but it felt like I was shifting spagetthi....

I'll try to swap the fluid and check those cables... see what happens smile.gif

lol, good luck, and as for the civic... i have a 90 hatch with over 300k on it... the old tranny had so much play in the shifter i could put it in first, and push the handle all the way over to where 5 gear should be.... fail. lmao.
