Time for a new muffler - 6G Celicas Forums

Topic #67035 42 posts Started by 6G96GT
I already have the ebay header installed along with a flex pipe and performance catalytic converter. I need a new muffler now and the piping that rides up and over the rear pass-side axle. I did have an Aeroturbine Muffler but I want something that will be more acomadating for my exhaust setup. Something that sounds deep and doesn't get tinny in the upper RPM range. Any ideas?
if u have your stock res, then u dnt need another one, the best way to get a deeper exhaust note is to replace your stock resonator with say a magnaflow one, that will almost kill all your tinny sounds, unless your muffler packing is gone. lol

I don't have the stock resonator anymore.
so with a resonator, my exhaust will sound better than if I just had a performance muffler.
So I need to get a muffler AND a resonator for optimal sound/gain?

having a res. will give less performance than a sraight pipe, but it will not make a huge impact on performance either way if its a straight through design, and will sound MUCH better.

you've never seen the inside of a resonator have you? the performance impact is about as great as...well nothing. it IS a straight through pipe.

i know this, thats why i said its almost nadda. but some stock res. have chambers, and retarded bends and such causing higher back pressures

i've never seen a resonator with any of that, that would be a muffler. just because its not at the end if the system doesnt mean its not a muffler. and then some OE systems have a resonator at the end.

yes there are resonators like that, blame it on gm, and nissan, some of there vehicles do have resonators like that, not mufflers

Lift Addict!! ^_^----------------------
so...would I want to get the Aero muffler with the resonator built in it? Or just get a regular performance muffler? I don't want to loose torque, I could care less about horsepower.
the bigger your pipe the less low end u will have, but the more topp end u will have, im not sure about that muffler, no idea how it works, but if u want deeper tone and a nice performance sound, get a performance, decent brand resonator, and a straight through muffler, but not a 30 dollor autozone special. lmao

Any brand names on those?
its more of what your happy with search around on the forums for exhaust clips and listen for a tone u like, id personally go for a vibrant or magnaflow resonator with an apexi n1 muffler or a magnaflow muffler

no, if it has a baffle it would be a muffler

>Resonators, also known as Helmholtz resonators are sections of exhaust pipe that expand to a larger diameter and allow the sound waves to reflect off the walls and cancel out. Resonators are mostly used to reduce raspiness and popping. Resonators are similar to an Expansion chamber, only for 4 stroke engines. They do not produce much back pressure.

Muffler!

Resonator!

, ok im sry, but when the box, and part say res. and it has chambers im forced to believe the manufacturer, i know what the diff. between a muffler, and a res is, but thanks u for the refresher

Ah, someone else got here to explain that all these ads for resonators aren't for resonators.

The Aero linked does not describe a resonator, but a straight-through: "A built in Resonator before our patented Air Foil is packed with high temperature ceramic packing." Resonators aren't stuffed with packing/insulation; absorption mufflers are packed. Resonators are hollow; they ring when struck. A straight-through muffler is often mistaken for a resonator because it isn't baffled, and because a round muffler appears much like a resonator from the outside.

Straight-through mufflers can be good designs; they are a modern take on the classic and now deeply outmoded glass pack. However, they address volume rather than tone. A smooth exhaust note almost requires a resonator in the system (some engines are smooth by themselves).
BORLA PRO XS, I have it, its free flow, cut the sound a lot and sound VERY DEEP
less than 90 bucks on ebay
get a glasspack or cherrybomb muffler!!!
LOL
i have a purple hornie glasspack muffler on my 1978 k5 blazer and it sounds like a freekin monster truck!

(could be because it is also a straight pipe from the engine tho) lol
gl with the choices you have

btw this is a pic of it smile.gif

If you want something that doesn't get raspy at high RPMs, then you need to look into name brands (ie. Greddy) and just as Ryouxrs said, you'll need a resonator.

In fact, probably 90% of the tone is derived from the resonator. I just put a Greddy SP 2 muffler on my stock system (stock resonator) and it's a little bit louder (less baffling inside of the muffler, newer filling, etc.) but the tone itself is almost exactly matched to my stock exhaust. Thanks to this, I've got an increase in power, but without pissing off my neighbors when I come home at 4-5am. Your first step should be to look into getting a resonator, the second step should be your muffler itself.

If you also want it to be a little bit deeper and meaner, enlarge your piping. I believe that standard piping on the GTs are 1.75" most people here say that you should go to 2.25" if you keep it N/A, or 2.5" if you turbo it. Your headers should be 2.25" already, or possibly 2.5". Take it to a muffler shop and have them remove and re-weld all of the piping. You'll love the outcome.

Live your life for yourself. Don't hold back for anything or anyone.
2 Magnaflow resonator Apexi N1 2.5 inlet 4in outlet and run 2 1/4 piping worth a try??

I don't normally drive fast, but when I do its on a curvy section of this island
Lots of excellent suggestions and info guys, thanks. I am definitely working on a resonator for the time being and the muffler will wait. Once I decide on a good resonator, I'll post back up and move on to the muffler.
Please do post about what resonator you're using; I just installed headers and can no longer stand the sound of my exhaust :'( (cry).

I use a custom glass pack and couldn't be happier. I have Ebay header then goes into a 2.25 piping (cat was replaced with custom glass pack) then into a magnaflow muffler. I am going to replace the magnaflows to an Apexi N1 to see if there is a difference though.

I had a Vibrant res/canister combo on my Celica and it sounded awesome- so much so that I bought a Vibrant catback for my WRX. Their stuff is pricey, but very much worth it.

Thanks guys for the update! I am looking into the Vibrant ones as well as a custom set up for a glass pack although I am leaning toward the Vibrant set up...just waiting for my buddy to remember to bring his welder home so he can help me.
muffler end I would try out the TANABE universal exhaust

okay so I can not find a vibrant or magnaflow resonator that will fit my celica. Are they all supposed to be universal? I need a 2" ID for both ends and at least 12" long. Any help in this -- part number or link?? Thanks!

MagnaFlow doesn't make resonators. They do make universal round-body straight-through mufflers, which look on the outside like a resonator, and are often mislabelled as such. I don't know for certain about Tanabe, but I'd bet they also do not make resonators.

I already have an aftermarket muffler though. Would that magnaflow straight thru muffler work for me if I install it before my already installed perf. muffler? I know 2 mufflers sounds stupid but it sounds to me like the straight thru magnaflow muffler is really a resonator (but labeled a 'muffler').
I just got an ebay muffler installed on my car. Its just a generic n1 can but it sounds amazing!! its really deep and you can feel it in your chest when you get on the gas. plus it was only 25 bucks! biggrin.gif i can post a sound clip sometime if you want.
