Guys,
two questions really.
As said in a previous post I was thinking about installing a turbo on my celica. I have a 3S-GE engine, and others here stated that should be possible if it is a healthy engine. However, I understood that there are different types of 3S-GE engines around, so I was wondering how can I find out what mine is without disassembling half the engine and comparing ports etc.? Will the version be printed/stamped somewhere, and if so, where would I find that?

Also, I was wondering if I could use a CT26 turbo. I spotted one on ebay, new, and for a decent price (currently halfway through bidding though). are there any other turbo types I could use?

Do you happen to know where the engine number is located by any chance? Would it be in the owners papers?

well if you stand on the passenger side (well passenger side for rhd aussie cars ) and look down to to the end of the block above the gearbox, just below the head. Its hard to see in a gtfour....you might need a mirror, or move some sh!t out of the way like air intake etc.

Managed to take a pic of my engine. based on the exhaust manifold, I doubt it is a rev 3 3S-GE engine:



As you can see it has only 6 bolts, rather than the 8 bolt configuration seen on Rev3 engines.
Does this mean my car has a rev 2 engine?

If you closely, you can see the head does have an area that would allow a hole to be drilled for the additional bolts (It's just right of the heat shield fixture hole).
However, considering the other holes are there I was wondering if I could still fit a rev3 exhaust manifold and turbo charge the engine.

What do you guys think?

A rev3 exhaust manifold would be the CT-20b from a ST-205 - Just FYI.
However - It looks like a CT-26 from a ST-185 would just bolt right on there like some of the 5S-FTE guys have done.

Engine looks definitly like a gen3 3s-ge. Intake-manifold contains the ACIS valves=>gen3
I can see the oil-cooler behind the exhaustmanifold, but no oil-filter.
Means the filter is located at the bottom of the engine =>gen3

If the oilfilter is bolted directly to the cooler=>gen2

yep looks like a gen3....but toyota obviously wernt worried so much about the head warping issues on that particular ge head.

so yeah a gen3 (or gen4) manifold will fit.

Have to say, not sure how you identified the oil cooler (I thought it was the smaller radiator in front of the main radiator; by the way, what's that second radiator for? For airco? I only saw one entry point, no exit point, and smaller piping than the main radiator). The filter is on the bottom of the sump.

By the way, I'm sure it snot as easy as 123 if I were to install a new manifold, with turbo and then into the intake.
I'm totally unfamiliar with tuning, so the less i need to do for that the better.
Wouldn't the ECU and fuel management computer manage all this based on the additional air going through the intake? If I were to do it this way, would it be an idea to install some sort of blow off valve (forgot the name of the type, but it woks on the vacuum from the head) between the turbo and intake to dump[ any air? I am aware that such a valve on its own wont be enough and I need to use the waste gate of the turbo as well to prevent compressor surge.

Anyway, tips are always welcome!

Oil cooler is above the oil distick, behind the exhaust manifold. The smaller radiator you're talking about is the transmission cooler.

You need to replace your valve cover gasket there...

as has been said the oil cooler is the one behind the exhaust manifold...and they use the engine coolant to cool the oil not frontal airflow.

the other radiator you mentioned is the air conditioning condensor.

the small core you see is the gearbox oil cooler.

a turbo upgrade requires massive ammounts of work and tuning. With you limited knowledge you better off getting a tuner to do it all to be honest.

You could buy a turbo/gen3 turbo manifold and it would all bolt up fine. Then you need to do intercooler piping, sort out oil feed ad drain, then in and out coolant lines for the turbo, then gettin a new exhaust because your stock one would be a bit too small for a turbo, then you need to make/buy a dump pipe to mate up to your exhaust.

thats the mechanicals...then you need to upgrade the fuel system, bigger fuel pump, a better fuel pressure regulator would be a wise investment too, plus bigger injectors.

Then there is the ecu, i dont know how similar the pin outs on the ecu are between the ge and gte engines. But at the very least you could get a workshop to wire in a full stand alone ecu like a wolf, haltech, motec, autronic, adaptronic etc.

then after that you would be fine.

best advice...source all the bits yourself, then take it to a good reputable workshop and get them to do the install.

ohh and the blow off valves vacuum line goes on the intake manifold between the throttle body and the head.

Sounds like a lot of work. Am not concerned with the mechanical part of thinsg. I'm sure I can do that myself. Its the actual setting up of the fuel management and new ECU that worries me, especially since I don't have access to a rolling road.

As for teh comment on replacing my valve cover gasket, I know it looks a little damp there, but the engine is actually not leaking any oil. Oil levels have always stayed the same a slong as I had the car, and it stays looking nice and clean when i inspect through the oil topup hole.
I might change it when I get around to sourcing all the parts.
For now I may just replace the header with one that I can use a turbo with (I assume a header replacement can be used with and without turbo?), and fit an indicution kit. I might buy the turbo if I come across a good deal.
