GT to ST brakes - 6G Celicas Forums

Topic #67479 6 posts Started by mrgignac
I have a 96 25th ann ST, and the front rotors, calipers, pads need replacing, I got a really good offer from someone, but they are off of a GT. I read the earlier post about how the GT brakes are %15 better. im getting the GT brackets as well. IF anyone knows a good online "how to" i would appreciate it, im not great with cars past oil changes and brake pads. I live in maine so the good toyota shops are far and few between. where can i get a chilton manual online?

Rear GT brake dust
Ive seen a few posts by GT owners that have a lot of brake dust on the rear wheels. Then I see other people saying that they have virtually none. My front brakes dust very little however the backs are horrible. Maybe the wheels have something to do with it? Maybe the 19s have more room for the brake dust to escape out onto the wheel? My buddy who has an 08 with the 18's hasnt washed his car in weeks and his rear wheels are as clean as his fronts. My car that got washed last week has a ton on the rear wheels.

Heres a couple I just took.

hmm look up 96 spec integra type r vs 98 spec on youtube. they upgraded rotors by 1" and the difference in braking was 40 ft shorter.

Dirty rims from the brake dust has to do with the type of pads you buy. and the rear should be a little less dirtier than the front if you buy the same pads for the front and rear.

I got my chilton manual from any automotive store. Kragen, autozone, pepboys. etc. im sure you can find it online.

I dont think so my 98 GT has stock 15" rims and my Rear Brakes have very little brake dust, my fronts get really dirty though. but i've noticed my Rear brakes kick in before, I'm just assuming the rears aren't needed for daily braking as much as the fronts are
Your fronts would get more dust than the rear because the front brakes bare most of the load when stopping. This applies to rear disc or drum brakes, it doesn't matter. (Of course you wouldn't see the dust in rear drums though) If the rear discs on a GT are dirtier than the fronts and are baring more load, then the brakes are out of adjustment or something. That's just not right.

To prevent the dust from building up you could get ceramic pads. They also tend to last longer than semi-metallic or organic pads, but the trade-off is that they're not as grippy as the others. I've got ceramic pads on all 4 (running a rear disc conversion) and have been very happy with them. But I also don't drive in such a way that I'd really require hard sudden stops. At least I try not to tongue.gif
the dust problem is because the rears have drums on the ST and the fronts are calipers...its not caused from anything else...as griff said, ceramic pads will cut down on the break dust by a decent amount
