is it difficult to do? I've never done it, but I refuse to pay someone else to do it for me. My clutch burnt out on me, and I need to replace it. Can I just drop the tranny and take off the old one and put new one on, etc? Or do I have to yank the engine?

you can pull the tranny off with the motor in the car.

If you got a lift, that will help a lot.

hey well i just recently changed my clutch on my car a month ago. I dont think its that hard. Well i didnt know how to do it. So i had my friend help me and i payed him $180 for it.

He had a lift at his house and he did an engine swap at his house before.

It took him about 4 hours to drop engine and pull out tranny. So probably a total of 12-16 hours if everything runs smoothly. We snapped off two one on the flywheel and another on the cross member. the one on the flywheel cause we didnt use the torque wrench. Make sure to buy a torque wrench its a must and also a manual helps out alot.

You need to take out both axles, unbolt the ball joints. Take out center crossmember. Unbolt both front and rear engine mounts. I heard the rear one is difficult to take out. I didnt deal with it cause first day he worked on it by himself (i was at work). and leave the left mount on so that the engine is tilted towards the right. you need the lift to hold the engine at an angle and a jack under the engine so you can manuever the tranny out. make sure you get your flywheel resurfaced (costs somewhere from $40-60). When bolting up the flywheel you can either use a crow bar on the little teeth of the flywheel to keep it from moving or get somebody to hold the crank bolt. If you dont do this correctly you can mess up the timing.

I know this is no how to, this is just to get an idea of what you need to do.

So should I get the flywheel resurfaced? how much is a tourqe wrench? how much tourqe should i put into the bolts and what bolts?

I just did this a couple months ago on my car. I would suggest replacing the axle seals while you are at it. They are like $10 a piece.

You should get your flywheel resurfaced. It may cost more than a regular flywheel since it is a dual surface flywheel. One surface for the pressure plate to mount to, and one for the clutch disc to contact.

A full clutch kit at advance auto is like $100 for the disc, pressure plate, throw out bearing, and alignment tool.

A torque wrench can be bought for pretty cheap at a place like harbor freight.

You will also need about 2 bottles of gear fluid since you are going to be leaking some, and you might as well replace it.

The reason I did my clutch was because I had to replace my transmission. So When i got the transmission out of the car at the junkyard, I went ahead and grabbed the flywheel so that I could get it resurfaced ahead of time.

Here is what everything cost me...

Clutch kit- ~$100
Axle seals- $20 for both
Flywheel resurfaced- $80 (There was only one place around that could do it, and they did an excellent job.
Gear lube- $10 for both bottles

Well mine is done. I'm 16 years old and i've never even pulled a engine or anything more than changing front brakes before, and I did it. It's tricky, you just may need a few extra hands. I couldn't take any pics other than what you see of the clutch I raped in 5 seconds flat.

good job on getting it done man, the first time is always the hardest. things get much easier after those first few projects.
trust me, after doing a handfull of clutch jobs, i can remove and reinstall a tranny (in a 100% stock car) in 2.5hrs. hehe

Idk if I explained how it happened, but long story short, on a hill/incline ( a crazy one ), from a stand still trying to go forwards, I put it in 3rd on accident and gunned it because I didnt want to run into a sign behind me from rolling back, well, i still rolled back lol. there is so much clutch dust or w.e in random places on me, and in my garage. When I pulled out the starter, I got clutch disc dust WHATEVER the name is, all over the ground and **** lol
