Oil light on when I start up - 6G Celicas Forums

Topic #67886 9 posts Started by SpardaXVII
Hey guys I just have a quick question. I've just done a fresh oil change about 2 weeks ago and since then when my car is cold just for a second or two max when I start it up my check oil light is on and I can hear a slight knock underneath the hood.
I've consistently checked my oil since the change hot and cold engine and its around the middle to the dip stick of not a bit higher. I've checked for any leaks on my filter and nut on the pan but they're both good.

Thanks in advance! I'm off to work so it will be a while for my responses.
Whenever I start mine up first thing, the oil light comes on for a sec or 2 (just like you said) and then it turns off. Also, I see the same thing happening with my mechanical oil pressure gauge as well. When I turn it on, a sec or 2 passes and then the oil press needle raises up to 60 psi. I don't have any other oil related issues, in fact my celica runs very strong.

I think it's normal. I'm curious now to see what other members write on this?

That is normal, the knocking is not. Rod bearings are worn and probably need replaced -- just my .02
--any chance you could record the sound for us?
Maybe the sound you're hearing is the valves clattering before they get oiled? I know mine starts and puts the oil light on for just a second or two, and the valves are noisy because they haven't received the pumped oil yet.

This is what I'm thinking, hoping its valves and not a rod knock. I'll try to get a recording up fairly soon just gotta find my camera.
Very cheap or defective oil filters can cause this.

There has to be more to it then that or I wouldn't be shelling out the money for Wix filters.

The oil light coming on means the oil pressure is low. If you KNOW you have enough oil in, and you've done everything right, the first thing I'd be concerned about is that your oil pump is failing.
So...if my light comes on for 2-3 seconds every time I start it but then goes away the rest of the driving time, can I expect any damage for just that mere 2-3 seconds of it being on say over a period of 2-3 months or more?
