"shift lock" it's written there... but since I do not have AT car I don't have idea what it should really do with car...

"Conventionally, in order to select the mode, the driver would have to move a gear shift lever located on the steering column or on the floor next to him/her. In order to select gears/modes the driver must push a button in (called the shift lock button) or pull the handle (only on column mounted shifters) out."

The red button is "Electronically Controlled Transmission," which does exactly what you said, it lets the engine rev higher than normal when shifting. My dad's 1998 Avalon has the same feature.

I use it to merge on the highway. =P
