Looking to replace all speakers in my 96 gt and add some subs. any recommendations as far as brands? trying to keep it relatively cheap. thanks.

Define cheap. What is your budget looking like? These threads always get out of control with costs as opinions fly and preferred brands come into question.

Are you building your own sub box or buying one? Do you want component speakers in your car or coaxial? You can get some decent package deals sometimes at some shops, like a box and sub for $150, for instance. If cost is a concern, see what some car audio shops have for package deals.

At 200-300 for all new speakers, amp, subs, amp wiring, sound deadening material to stop rattles and what sounds like full installation, I think you better look for either deals, used stuff or miracles.

Are you installing this, friends, or are you going to get it installed? Installation prices will eat up most of your budget if you pay to have it done.

you can get some Alpin speakers on ebay for half the price --
I wouldn't go cheap on an amp - I prefer Alpine

It cost me about $400 to replace my speakers and put an amp in myself, but I went with the better stuff. Amp cost me $250 on ebay and front speakers were $80 i think and rear $50 plus cables and fuse stuff.

I have 4 clarions, 2 3" tweeters, and 2 12's in a non ported (i think divided though) box, sealed and carpeted correctly... I got the box from my best friend for $20 (i'll probably resell it back to him eventually for the same, he aint using it, and he is my friend, thats why its dirt). you could replace all 4 speakers (if the sound system is the basic package) for $80, purchasing brand new speakers from newegg.com. the amp and subs is gonna be a bit more than $300 by itself. (the 2 12's I got as doing favors for people).. plus your gonna have to buy a box for the subs. and wiring subs isn't easy, but isnt hard at all... do you have a stock head unit? if not, get a new one.. i prefer clarion. all my speakers are clarion, however my head unit is sony, but a clarion headunit is on the way :D:D:D:D the 2 tweeters, i'll take a pic of those later... but those were just given to me, idk the brand, i just put them in above my back seats. i'll take a pic soon lol.

yea im not looking for top of the line at the moment. but when i bought my celica the sound system was horrible. it has an aftermarket head unit and 6 speakers. 2 in the doors 2 in the back and little 1 inchers up in the window that dont do anything. i just want somethin that bumps

I expirenced the same issue when it came down to re doing my stereo system I whent to my local flea market and got me some 8" subs for the doord (pyramids) and they only cost me like not even 80 buks. As for the two 6.5" that go on the back seat panels I got 2 of the 6.5" power bass subs for $75 and the back speaker I've had thos fo a wile... But trust me you don't want to much thump because you inside can bearly hear the song and outside is a rattle box. When you ask for subs for the inside of the car put the for voice that way you can hear the songs and then do the sub separetly that way you can do base then so you can get your thump....

I install as a side job. I just did a buddy's corolla with an Alpine deck, type-s coaxes all around, and a mrp-500 amp and type-s 12" at cost + 5% and it ran him $650. For $300 you could do an amp and sub off of ebay.
I run 6.5" components and 6.5" coaxes in the back with a single 10" and it sounds pretty damned close to Alpines custom CLS, cleanliness wise. Bigger doesnt always mean better. Go for the better quality and youll be happier than you would be if you just bought no-name stuff...

honestly, if you are looking for something that hits hard and is cheap...go for MTX man. i only spent $275 for my sub system at www.sonicelectronix.com and everything in my car rattles like crazy. i mean EVERYTHING. everything else is really up to you. depending on what you want to spend, you can spend $100-xxxxxx anything really. i got infinity comp speakers in my door, and passenger speakers and i got really clear and crisp highs and lows. for a deck...i really like Kenwood Excelon series. in my opinion, as good if not better than alpine, without the high prices.... gl deciding!

Having sold/installed about all of the above, i like alpine best for decks, amps, and usually speakers. Kenwood is good if you get their low end stuff. Their high end stuff is just like Pioneer and tends to have issues over time (motorized parts break and oled screens arent quite to production quality). I do like Pioneer decks if youre willing to spend over $300 because they include an eq. Alpine tends to leave any tuning options to their new Imprint system. It costs about $250.
Alpine subs hit a little higher than Fosgate or any of the other brands, unless you have type r or type x. These guys suck power and its best to run them with higher RMS wattage than not. Ive had really great luck with Infinity subs. The old (aluminum woofer) kappa series and kappa perfects have outstanding bass quality and dont require a huge amp like most other subs do. For under 500 RMS, id do Infinity kappa. For over 500 RMS, id do Alpine, Fosgate T series, or the old MB Quart lines from when Fosgate owned them.
Overall, you get what you pay for with electronics. Alpine isnt super flashy or super technical, but they last forever and they definitely take a lot more of a beating than anything other than the cheap Kenwoods ive seen or worked on. Stay away from no-name brands like Dual. Sony stuff sucks, as well... Keep with the stuff you know and dont be afraid to spend a little bit more. It may just pay off down the road.
