Do HID's go bad if it blinks??? - 6G Celicas Forums

Hey guys, was just wondering; I hooked up some HID's on my fog lights and the only thing I am worried about is when I arm my car, the HID's blink as well as the parking lights. I was just wondering if the HID ballast or even the bulb will go bad if this continues to happen. I know that HID's happen to take around 5-10 seconds to warm up, but will it cause any damage if this happens daily? Please help me out, I wll greatly appreciate any help.

not sure if i can prove it but when my fog lights blink all the time they do go out, Ive had to replace them a couple times. either ballasts or bulb. I've seen this problem more evident in fog lights. I dont think it is good.

if they blink for an extended period of time, or you do this often, they'll go bad, because during startup the ballast is working harder and gets hot, ballast don't like high temperatures, so the exposure to this startup time for a long period of time will eventually burn the ballast, also make sure the ballast is not installed on a clogged area ( like on our driver side ) some people stick the ballast between the battery and other accessories not leaving enough space clear for the ballast to radiate heat.

They don't really blink for an extended period of time; it's only when I arm and disarm my car. For example, when I arm my car it blinks twice, and when I disarm my car it blink once. But this happens atleast once a day, because my car is a daily driver. I don't suppose that would be an extended period of time, unless of course you mean I do it once a day for a long time? I just really wanted to know if this will cause a problem for me in the long run. I would think that blinking an HID wouldn't be TOO bad for the bulb and ballast, but I was just thinking to myself.

If I were you I would rewire the alarm to the indicators (as they are done in the rest of the world). HID's should not be flashed. I used to flash people to let them out of junctions or on motorways and that killed my HID's. Unless you plan on using your lights (at night for eg), dont on/off your HID's.

I'm pretty good at electrical, but not the best. Do you have a wiring diagram so I'll know which color is the indicators???

Scratch that. I just took a look at the alarm diagram and figured out that they have a fuse for the light blinkers. I just pulled the fuse on that and now no lights blink at all when I arm/disarm, so it's better than blowing my HID ballasts or the bulbs. So now I am good, HOPEFULLY! I am going to the place where I got my alarm put in to make sure that is all that fuse is good for. If anything, I'll ask them if they could just make the blinking stop for the fogs. Thanks a lot guys. You ALL have been VERY helpful. Hope I could do the same for you guys in the near future.

You had them installed by a shop and they wired your alarm indicator to your foglights? Hell, that was against standard practice when I had my alarm installed ten years ago -- and HID was not common back then.

The stock alarm is also wired this way as is my aftermarket alarm. I think it's way more common than you think.

Toyota wires up their alarm to just the amber parking lights.

Apparantly not universally - I've owned (2) 6GCs that say otherwise

Factory alarms being wired to fogs I can understand -- the factory knows what will be in the fogs, every time. Shops, on the other hand, deal with a variety of cars whose owners by definition are willing to mess with stock parts.

What kind of alarm do you have? If it's a Clifford G5, then you could just pull the fuse on the alarm and then you wouldn't have to worry about it. If you look by the brain of the alarm it will have two fuses, a 12 and a 5. The 15 fuse is the one you want to pull out. That's what I did with mine. The only thing is that none of your lights blink when arming/disarming, but I'd rather have working HID's than having to worry about blowing my HID's everytime I arm/disarm my car. I have the stock alarm system for my celica, how do i make it so the lights dont turn on when i arm and disarm?

Well I'm not the expert on this, but I beleive you would have to change the remote wire for the fogs on your Celica. Let me guess, your fogs turn on when you turn on the parking lights alone right??? I beleive that would be your answer, but don't quote me on it. I'm not too sure, but I had my fogs run so when you turn the parking lights on alone, the fogs come on as well. So since my after market alarm was making the parking lights blink when I arm/disarm, the fogs would blink too when I arm/disarm. I know they have a way to switch the fog light remote wire on to the parking light remote wire, so maybe you could follow those guidelines vice versa. The link for the fog light re-wire is the second post on here I beleive, check it out and see if that's your problem. Again, this is just my guessing going on here, if anyone else can help Freddy out please do so.

actually no my fogs are a seperate switch from the parking lights. its all attached to the same shaft off the steering wheel but the fogs only turn on when i have the foglight switch on.

Yea, that's how my fog switch is too, but does your fogs come on when you turn on the fogs switch and just do 1 click on for the parking lights alone?? What I mean is, you know how you could turn on your tail/parking lights without the headlights on??? With your fogs switch ON, put JUST YOUR TAIL/PARKING LIGHTS on without the headlights (1 click, not two) and see if the fog lights come on. The way factory OEM settings are is that your fogs can only be switched on when your headlights are on with the foglight switch; atleast that's how the OEM setting was run on my car. If they can turn on without the headlights then I beleive someone re-wired the switch to turn on with the parking lights.

Wow I didn't even know you could change that. BUT, we are trying to get his fogs, which he converted to HID's, to stop blinking when he arms/disarms his car. Not his blinkers to stop blinking. Because if HID's continue to blink, it could be harmful for the ballasts and bulbs. Read the beginning posts and you shall see what I am talking about.

Wow I didn't even know you could change that. BUT, we are trying to get his fogs, which he converted to HID's, to stop blinking when he arms/disarms his car. Not his blinkers to stop blinking. Because if HID's continue to blink, it could be harmful for the ballasts and bulbs. Read the beginning posts and you shall see what I am talking about.

I understand that it would work, but we are trying to STOP his lights from blinking.

laugh.gif my bad, but it still isn't a bad idea to make sure you have blinker fluid. You need to change it every so often wink.gif

Cool, thanks. I'll look into that; I have always wondered what I could do to reduce the loud blinking noise. Thanks again.
