Turnip, where do you race?

good thread.

Found it on craigslist. Wanted a parts car for doors, radiator, hood, front bumper, and the rear under carriage since my local junkyards dont have any 6gens. Now just kicking around making it a backup track car as well and just need to research the best animal to squeeze in it. Since it has a 7afe i believe the axles and spindles are different than the GT. Would love to put a beams in it but not opposed to putting a 4age 20v or blacktop in. Just need to find out whats all involved before I grab an engine and transmission.

I hope to have the black gt dyno'd in a week or two and then I will start the cage fabrication and dash gutting since I am basically done with the engine, drivetrain and exhaust. Still gonna work on the intake but I need to move the battery first which would be after i get the cage in. Plus I have to take out the glass which I hate because I always end shattering all through the car and garage. Probably do the dash gutting between now and thanksgiving and then get the glass out before I start the cage.

Its a little more muffled with it on and between 5-7k its sounds like super bike not to much different than how a Lotus sounds with the VonHep exhaust. I just wish this Beams went to 8650 before hitting the rev limiter like my Lotus did. With the muffler off its just crazy loud. Before starting this project I preferred to get the last gen celica to race because the GTS had the same engine as the lotus but a little different tune. Just too much money and I spent most of the summer looking for one that was crashed but had no luck finding one so I decided to go this route.

Pic of the Lotus.

OT: 2ZZ (duzzy) are great motors. I was able to extract 40 additional whp and incredible mid range from Power FC tuning , PPE header, etc. Best of all was the engine was left unopened. (2001 ZZT-231 GT-S)

I believe you will be satisfied with the BEAMS in the car. smile.gif

Nice Lotus! smile.gif Great in black, eh?

Yeh the 2zz is freaking awesome but being that they are a little pricey I will stick with the BEAMs for now. Hopefully this Celica body will hold up.

No worries; I'm sure you'll love the BEAMS setup in the GT.

Do most of the S54 transmissions have LSD? Or is it just hit and miss? Out of three motors I found locally, only 1 had confirmed LSD. The others "weren't sure". And there was no door tag to inspect.

I guess I could always just physically look. But, for motors out of state, that's a bit difficult.
Crank Pulley Installed with no AC or PS

$12 belt from advance auto. Make was a driverite - #378K4 its a snug fit on and you have to walk it on by turning the crank and then it frees up and you tighten the tensioner. I have about 1/2 inch more on the tensioner if need be. I really struggled finding the right belt and have several hours in that project alone. The crank pulley had to be dremeled as well because of the coating where it slides on the crank. That took a while to get a nice fit but its good to go now.

Gutting started today. Trying to decide weather to take the heat core out and if I should use the top dash plastic. The top dash pad for the celica is quite heavy. I was little suprised. Tempted to add a second small radiator under the dash in place of the heater core. Heat kills engines and in my experience you cannot keep it cool enough when racing.

It was so nice yesterday I decided to take it out for a quick blast before the neighbors call the cops. The road was a little damp and with the LSD and no power steering it was fighting me a little. Definitely have to be careful. At the end you hear the container of bolts and screws fly around. Borrowed my buddies headrest camera holder. Thats with the glasspack on. Since I got this camera mount I will try to get a few more videos. Just have to make sure no cops around. With the leaves falling off the trees its insanely loud.

Test Run

Okay only worked a half a day today and its beautiful out so I grabbed some vids with the muffler off. Probably be a couple of weeks till i get to the dyno and then all the glass comes out. Again I wish I had more room to open it up.

Haha I want to drive my GT4 through your neighborhood, looks like a rally stage!

Whys your exhaust so tinny? Looks like your acceleration is pretty quick for a FWD NA on that type of surface - especially when you get into the VVT-i range.

Im not sure what the diameter of the Beams exhaust was but I went from the exhaust manifold to the y collector with 2 1/8". Then from the y collector to muffler is 2.25. Its short in length on purpose. One is weight and the other is that they seem to always get torn off racing when you have to drive into the infield to avoid a pile up or if the track is really rough. It definitely was more responsive without the muffler.

As for acceleration, all thats left in the car is the glass. Definitely removed over 150lbs in weight and taken 8-10lbs off the crank via lightweight crank pulley and flywheel. In addition power steering is usually a hog of horsepower and thats no longer on the car. Just the altenator. Should get it on the dyno by month end.

Yeah I meant tinny (not tiny) as in sounds like a stone in a tin can. But since you mention you had no muffler on it, that explains why.

how much weight did you save by taking out the power steering???

AC was 15lbs
PS was 9lbs

Hoping to gain some extra horsepower by reducing parasitic loss caused by both. With that said, I suspect that the toyota design will be more efficient than the Dodges and GMs and the gain could be less but will see in a few weeks after the dyno.

Thanks for the reminder. Had some crazy crazy personal stuff to deal with plus been sick for about a month and with the holidays and work I just got destroyed. With that said, glass is all out and cage is in. I will post up some new pics today. I finally got a new camera as well.
So finally got the new plasma out over the weekend and jumped in with my buddy and hammered it out. Not far from completion on the inside. Need to fab up some bumpers.

Tracked it last night. Got spun into the wall but damn its flies. Will post up some pics later. Again thanks for all the help everyone. Need wider tires and suspension tweaking now and it will really fast on dirt with the rest of the cars im running with.
So last night was first time out on the dirt. Need to lower the car and get wider tires. I should be able to squeeze 225s or 235s on the front. Also gonna need a new rim and strut from hitting the wall. Anyone have spring they can recommend?

how do you like it, i love mine

Who would've thought that a BEAMS would be powering that thing...nice though.

And I would personally recommend Eibach Sportline springs, nice drop and increase in stiffness, but it's not too low. I assume you can't go very low on a dirt track.

Love it. Just cant wait to have tons of traction compared to what I had. Definitely looking into the eibach springs now. Trying to decide on what tire to go with 225/60 or 245/55-15? I cannot find a 245/55-15 which would be the ideal tire height. So I can go with the 225s or try to find a 16" with the right offset thats 16x7 to accomodate a 245 since there is more tire options for that width and the 16 rim.

Update: Decided to go with the 225s now since they can be on for this weekend. Will have to find a rim that can supports the 245s
