I think my tranny seal may be leaking on the left side of the car?how do i change it?do i have to drop the tranny?

Well your transmission is located on the driver's side of your engine bay, so most any leak would appear on the driver's side. If it's one of the case seals and you don't have any experience disassembling a trans then you might want to let a pro do it. I believe there are at least a few of them you can do without dropping it out of the car.

If it's an axle seal then you must remove the axle assembly to replace it. Keep in mind that if the output bearing at the axle shaft is worn badly it wont do you any good to replace the seal, as it will probably still leak due to bearing play.

It's slightly possible that the leak could be coming from your drain plug if you had the fluid changed recently. This plug is a large bolt head almost 1" in diameter on the side near the bottom of the trans.

well anyways the first pic is the driver's side and the second is the passengers. remove axle and use a flat head screwdriver wrapped in a terry towel and pry the seal out from behind it. might take a little force and then some if its the first time the seal is being touched. **BE VERY CAREFUL NOT TO SCRATCH THE INSIDE OF THE TRANS WHEN YOU PRY OUT THE SEAL**

i just replaced my tranny with a used one and i know the drain bolt isnt leaking but where its leaking from looks like its rite under the driver side axle.i just got the seal today im pretty confident thats wut it is thanx for the info guys the pics are a good help.

look for threads on how to remove the axle and decide if you want to do it your self. dealers charge 250 for this

i have a friend with a lift, he did it last time for 100, he says its the cv itself that has a bad seal, does anyone have a part number for this seal?

there are no "seals" in the cv.
if the boot is torn, replace it before it starts clicking, or if the seal for the tranny is leaking, do that.
a 10$ seal puller from autozone makes the job easy once you get the axle out.

By "seal" maybe he meant the clamps holding the boot tight were getting loose. Thats what happened to mine, no tears, but the clamp was failing. But as far as seals in the CV, yeah, what pressure said. And I can say that removing the CV with a slide hammer/puller attachment is a thing of beauty!

Its not hard to remove and its the tranny seal I believe

My tranny is leaking on the passenger side, it has been since i got the car, but it's not that much. It doesn't do it regularly either. I'm guessing it's the seal from what everyone has said on here. Is it a bad thing if I don't change it?

fixed it, was the seal, there was a bunch of debris in the seal that ripped it, also found a very small tightly wound spring, anyone know what that could be?

Not that Ive ever replaced the seal myself, never had the need to. But usually if there is a spring on a seal its supposed to sit on the "backside" of the seal. In essence its just supposed to help keep the seal conformed to the shaft.
