I want to upgrade power but my cars automatic transmission is definitely going to hold me back, I hear of everyone talking about throwing in the E-153 but what about the automatic transmission for the camry instead? would that work in my car and maybe hold more power than the tranny I have in my car now? I really don't want to go through the hastle of swapping in a manual transmission but if that's my only option I guess I have a while to go considering my limited knowledge of the matter and I having no money. Or what about the Beams automatic transmission, is there anyway to convert that to only fwd rather than have it as the awd.

camry v6 transmission would fit probably but youd need new mounts and axels, 4 cylinder camry would still be weak.

I'm not even sure if beams came with an auto transmission, if it did it would be a fair amount stronger but rare...

Why not just go manual? It's not that bad in city driving, but its great on a good road.

it's more of the fact that i don't have anyone that would be willing to help me, because I've never done anything like that before, and paying a professional to do it is just to expensive i'd rather sell my car and get a different one but I really don't want to sell my car just because of a transmission.

BEAMS did come with auto.

A540E or A541E are the tranny's you are looking at. they form from the 40E comes from the first gen v6 camry, the 41E is 96-01, research if they will bolt up to a 5s-fe!

you'll need the right ECM to run any toyota transmission ending in E, they're electronically controlled by the computer. so a V6 camry trans would need a V6 camry computer, etc etc.

not to mention gearing is WAY different, 1st and 2nd gear ratios as well as final drive are totally different and not at all suited for a 4 cylinder engine.

Manual and auto transmissions are completely different. You don't get to choose when the car shifts with an automatic, it shifts when the ECU tells it to. Since the V6 camry auto trans would need the v6 ecu to function you're basically hosed, unless you want to swap the V6 in.


E153 is a manual and isn't controlled by the ECU, which is why it can be used. It's suited for a V6, but that is just added strength for a 4cyl.

i see it like this: my celica and my ES300 have the same gear ratios just different final drives. at 65mph in the celica im doing 3000rpms. in the lexus its 2850. too tall? i dont think so.

BEAMS wasn't AWD. If you are going to swap auto transmissions, then it's only a little bit more work to make it a manual, and worthwhile. Besides the transmission swap, you'd just have to install new pedals, shifter linkage, and various other bits and pieces, but it'd be way worth it, and not a whole, whole lot more work.
