how to clean alternator - 6G Celicas Forums

Topic #70475 6 posts Started by Hanyo
when ever i detail my engine bay i always avoid putting a water in it.

So how do you suppose to keep the alternator clean? Or more importantly how do you clean it?

Depends on the finish -- if it's your typical aluminum case, metal polish. If you really want it to shine, pull it, remove the case and polish a finish onto it (steel wire wheel works well for a machined finish). I cleaned mine with a rag and light degreaser, then used silver polish on it.
if you want it to look professional you need to split the case and get it vibro-polished then buffed. theres just no way to hit all the little corners otherwise.

not really into want to get it polished clean. I just want to clean it so it looks clean like the rest of my engine bay. At the moment it is the dustiest part under the hood.
in that case, just take a brass or stainless steel brush to it. its not dust, its corrosion. clean the surface and paint it silver.

it dust. If i took a pressure water to my alternator it would brand new.

But from my past experience water in the alternator is not good. The last time I pressure washed the engine a check engine light came on and i have to physically go through ALL the connectors with an air compressor. That was not fun.
