Heya im thinking about taking off that fabric stuff under the bonnet cus not sure what its for and is getting worn, is there any danger in me doing this and would i need to get nething to cover the hole where the grill is in my bonnet if so what do i need?

i've also thought of doing that and making a custom one with fiberglass, but ive never actually got to that, so i cant really help you, if you cant get it off for safety reasons you can always cut off any hanging sections if thats your case, that way it wont get cought on the belt

Yes, you can take that off. No, there are no hazards. It's just for heat protection for your paint, but from what I understand, it doesn't get hot enough under the hood of a Celica to do any real damage. It's an excellent way to save weight too.

its there for fire safety......it could help i guess to protect paint from heat damage but it mainly there to sufficate a fire incase u get an engin fire....the plastic clips that hold it to hood will melt when a fire starts and the fiberglass or whatever its made of falls on engin sufficating fire..........at least thats whats its supost to do..........i dont have one on mine either.....

I removed mine

well it is fire retardant, but its pretty much used as insulation. by this it acts at insulation from heat and also for noise. keep in mind that not everyone that buys a car wants to hear it running, but actually they want the car to be quiet. not a problem removing it, and if its deteriorating, i would say take it out as the fire retardant that it was sprayed with is probably worn out and could become a fire hazard if you ever had it touch the exhaust or if a flamable liquid sprayed on it and ignited, could make the fire worse.

mine was tearing up at the front where the rain catch tray pours on the radiator. while you drive the wind blows it back on the insulator and the air resistance basically ruins the insulator. so i cut the torn area off including the area surrounding the center vent, while the sides and rear section are still on.

lol. no it was quite on fire, i also thought it was flame retardant, i asked the fireman, he said "nothing is," while soaking it with the fire hose. LOL.

it was coated with flame retardant back when the car was made, but after time goes on it looses the coating. also because it has flame retardant doesn't mean its flame proof.

i know mine is all torn up and such, which doesnt help. I know its not flame resistant, im just saying, it didnt do much to deter the fire or stop it from spreading across the thing, from my experience, it was burning fairly strong. maybe if in the event there is a large fire and it falls on it like a blanket it might help.

thanks guys do i need to buy anything to cover the engine for when it rains could water damage occur if nothing is there?

you don't have to have the insulator...it just helps deter water...(my opinion: not effectively made), and to deaden the sound from the engine...i have seen many people with it off.

Be aware however that without that insulation the hood will get hotter, and when you combine a hot hood and rain, you get water marks. Depending on the air quality in your area, those water marks could end up as significant etching into your clearcoat.
