sometimes.. - 6G Celicas Forums

when i brake hard, e-brake light comes on and goes back off when car weight shifts.

sometimes when the car shifts weight when changing from 1st to 2nd or in 2nd gear and releasing the gas pedal, it lights on too.

is this bad and how could i fix this? thanks

Yep, you need to fill up your brake fluid.

^---- agree with above. I actually posted a thread a while ago saying I was having the same problem, topped off the brake fluid res and the problem went away.

Why does everybody just say this? Sure the level can be on the low side, but you aren't telling why that will be! Mostly because of worn brake pads, so the pistons are way out of the caliper cylinders. So check your pads before you will top the fluid of, otherwise it will be a huge mess under the hood when you replace the pads another time!!!

True, you should check your pads. As your pads wear down they need to be pushed farther out, making the fluid levels in your res read low. If you replace the pads and your fluid levels are still at low then you need to look into a fluid leak somewhere.

And if you say it's already full then I would go ahead and replace the pads now and have your rotors turned. Put the car on jack stands and take the rotors some place to be turned, and while everything is off go ahead and toss on some braided lines on there.

what do you mean by rotors turned? is that the same as resurfacing it? i had new rotors installed on july '08 nad the brake pads as well. i will try to check them again to make sure.

i just dont quite get this but is the ebrake mech/system different from the rear brakes?

Turned=resurfacing

And I believe the e-brake is a drum-in-disc assembly. When you apply the e-brake it pushes a drum-like brake shoe onto the inside of your rear rotors. When you slip the rear rotors off you'll see what I mean.

if you check all that stuff out and the light still comes on. Get a wiring diagram and trace out what ever powers up that light and check that out.

Did you ever get this figured out? I would've also said to check and make sure your brake fluid level is correct. Next step I'd take is to bleed the brake lines, make sure there's no air in them, and then add whatever amount to the fluid reservoir to make sure it's still correct. If that still doesn't resolve the issue, and your brake pads are good, I'd probably start considering any possible failure in the brake master cylinder.
Man, that happens to me too. When I brake hard, the brake light comes on.

We used to have a Ford Exploder that would display the E-Brake light if you slammed on the brakes. It had something to do with the ABS. Not a likely culprit in this instance since you said it comes on sometimes when you shift, but you never know. Just thought I'd throw my two cents in.

not yet. ill try to bleed it over the weekend.

braking hard and shifting between 1-2-3 gear. i remember last year, this happened already until the e-brake light wont go off. then after driving in the rain, it went away which i find it weird.

mine doesnt have an ABS. its something that triggers it when a lot of weight shifts to the front

I still think it has something to do with your brake master cylinder, you're POSITIVE the fluid level is correct? There's two lines, the bottom line is the minimum amount needed and the top is the Full line. Make sure your parked on level ground and double check that fluid level, I really really think that's all it is. I think there's a little floaty thing in there, too, maybe your floaty thing is stuck and it's triggering the fluid level sensor? If it's not that, then it's gotta be that your brake master cylinder is failing and putting a heavier load on it is maxing out its failing hydraulic system.
ill try to siphon some out and refill.

Don't syphon it out, bleed the brakes!
