Hi all,

Just trying to remove this funky old man smell out of my family members car.


I've tried all my tricks and none of them work.

I think the smell is coming from the driver seat.

Any suggestions besides sowing together bounce sheets as a seat cover?

You may also try put under the seat cat's poo... in few days it definitely beat "old man smell" .

dude, im following this thread very closely. i was considering making a similar topic but my situation is far worse. id take an old man over rotten fish any day. about a month ago a friend gave me some fish in a plastic bag which i left there in the sun for 2 days. lets just say that i have tried every spray/air freshener and i still can get rid of the smell.

it's probably old man sweat that got absorbed into the seats.. lol. get the seats professionally steam cleaned and deodorized.

i don't know if it'll work for you or not. but if I remember right, you can pour some vinegar in a bowl or something and just let it sit in your car for a while (days). it is pretty good at taking odors out of the air. But yeah, do some deep cleaning, thats sure to get it done.

Buy a pack of cigarettes and smoke them in the car with the windows up. lol jk. Best thing to do is clean the seats like a previous post said. I also buy these air fresheners that really make your car smell great. I mean anything i leave in my car overnight smells like it. They are available at places like autozone and walmart. old man and fish pass, once a left the drivers window open at the next day found out that my cat slept on the back seat on top of my college backpack, on the middle of the night the cat feels like he needs to go to the restroom, so guess what the F*^$&#ing cat decide to PEE on my backpack and then flee from the car, two days later the smell was sick.

how do I solved..nah it wasn't me my mom clean everything up with Lysol, couple of cans later, No smell, no chanse to get flu, no nothing, just a nice smell on the car.

6 months later no smell of cat pee

Pull the seats out and remove the seat covers. Throw them in the washing machine on gentle cycle, use lots of fabric softener, for that matter once the machine fills up, shut it off and let them soak for about 10 minutes.

While the seats are out, get yourself a can of Resolve, the kind in the spray can with the scrubby thing on the cap. Vacuum the hell out of the car and then spray the **** out of the carpet with that Resolve. Use scrubby end to really work it into the fabric. Let it dry, and then vacuum very thoroughly again. Repeat if necessary.

Then, reinstall your now clean (let them air dry, don't put them in the dryer) seat covers and enjoy.

You might also consider getting a cleaner product for the fresh air intake vent. There's this stuff you can spray in the vent opening by the hood (I'm assuming you're talking about a Celica here) that you then leave your a/c blowing full blast for like 10 minutes, it's supposed to deodorize the vent system and kill any mildew. I know it helped my car, mine smelled like socks whenever I turned on the a/c for a while there.

but kidding aside, I have already shampoo the carpet with some blue magic carpet cleaner with a brush. I already put vinegar then baking soda all over the car to absorb the oder.

I bought a hand held carpet cleaner and cleaned the entire interior. (alot of brown water came out.)

The rest of the car smells fine, its just has a hint of old man smell. So now i'm looking at something industrial cleaners that smell good.


anyone know where to buy the "new guy fabric cleaner" at? Any other tricks of the trade cleaners?

There's a product called "Ozium" - you can get it at car parts stores like O'reilley's, etc. I believe that hotels actually use that stuff to de-stink hotel rooms. I've heard it's really good.

Edit: Oh, and seriously, assuming you have fabric seats... removing those seats and covers and running them through the wash will make a HUGE difference. It's really worth the effort!

When my girlfriend and I moved down the street she decided to put our garbage can in the back of my WRX. Well there was a freezer bag of raw chicken juices that spilled out into my trunk - and this was during the summer! I gutted the back of the car and steamed every fabric piece and lysoled the spare tire well. After a couple of months of driving with all of the windows down it finally went away.



So old people smell is nothing. Stop complaining.



Take the seat out, remove the seat cover and wash it and hang it up to dry (do not put it in the dryer!). Then reinstall. No more old people smell.

Take a bath everyday.....

Take the carpet out and wash it..

lay the seats under the sun to kill any mold

Did you use a 70/30 mix with your carpet cleaner(carpet cleaner/vinegar) and clean it that way? Always worked in all the cars I've cleaned. If you mix the vinegar in with the carpet cleaner when you are deep cleaning, it works a lot better imo.

Maybe you can try some deodorizer first before having a freshener. That is what I did when I had some problem with my carpet. I think I used some thetford deodorizer for it before having a pine air freshener.

I think you should first deodorize your car before buying a air freshener. This will definitely neutralize your car odor. Anyways, you can always try a thetford deodorizer, that is what I used last time.

buy a bunch of oranges and make fresh orange juice, Take the skins you cut off and throw them under the seats and leave them there for about 4-5 days. the acid in them will take the smell right out and leave the car smelling like oranges. also look into deep cleaning/foaming organge sprays, and clean the entire car really well, not just the seats.
