5s distributer differences - 6G Celicas Forums

Topic #73087 14 posts Started by D-Man
my story:

my stock 95 5sfe is dead. time to swap. got ahold of a new 5sfe.

old 5sfe had the internal distributor cap ignition.

new 5sfe has the external distributor cap ignition.

my question:

what is, (if any) ecu/wiring harness differences between the two? is the engine all i need to swap out? or is there a revamped ecu? what changes to any of the harness' will i need to make, or will it be direct plug? what else do i need to know?

There IS a difference in the o2 sensors.

old 5s = 1 wire
new 5s = 2 wire

will this all match up?

well if it depends which wiring you are using, here is another difference.

>the 96+ have the crank sensor intergrated into the oil pump housing, and the trigger wheel for it is intergrated into the crankshaft t-belt pully.
you will need to swap those over, along with the distributor, ect.

congrads man! wish i could help out on this one! but i do remember being told that all the blocks are basically the same (5s,3s) and that you can interchange sensors... (the one near the pump specifically) ive even seen a guy using a 3s head on a 5s block and make 600+ hp

its not a problem swapping a diffrent gen, just use the old accessories off the old motor.

is there a wrightup on wiring in the new acc? i'd really like to ditch the cali-emmision BS; as i live in texas where emissions dont matter. (yeah, the whooping 5hp difference laugh.gif )

honestly i like the idea of the external better.

i've been searching, but supprisingly, there are very few 5s(ca) to 5s(norm) swaps being done. I may just be a one of a kind laugh.gif (bragging rights tongue.gif )
