Feeler: Custom Lighted Steering Wheel Covers - 6G Celicas Forums

Topic #73174 11 posts Started by Espo
Basic Idea:
I'm thinking about selling some custom steering wheel covers. Turnaround will be about 10 business days before they ship after payment, considering I have to source my materials from elsewhere (they're shipped to me), and hand make these (I.E. No machinery involved). The covers will come with either clear lighted sections, red lighted sections, or blue lighted sections:

I don't have a picture of the red one, but you get the idea.

Lighting Choices:
The lights are your choice of LED 6" strips, EL Wire or 8.5" LED Strips. (Meaning mix & match, red cover, blue lights, etc. etc.) Yes, the photos are from streetglow's site...best example I could find of the materials I'll be using.

LED 6" Strips:

LED 8.5" Strips:

EL Wire:

Color Choices:
6" LED Strips:
-Green
-Blue
-Red
-Yellow
-Orange
8.5" LED Strips:
-Green
-Blue
-Red
-Purple
-White
-Amber
EL Wire:
-Coral
-Green
-Red
-Turquoise
-White
-Yellow
-Orange
Pricing Estimates:
You will be able to get any steering wheel color you like (white/blue/red) with no difference in price. The difference is what type of lighting material you decide to use. The estimates below are to anywhere in the US, and do take into consideration excess material left over, I.E. the three sections on the steering wheel cover are 8.5 inches in length, the EL Wire comes in 5 foot sections, each wheel is only using 42.5% of the material purchased, I'm only charging you for 42.5% of the material+shipping used. This is probably the cause for the high prices of the 6" LED style, I have to buy two packs in order to make one wheel cover. (Price of 2 packs*.75, using 3/4 of material purchased)

All Colors, 6" LED Strips: $70 Shipped to the US
Downgrade to 3" LEDs: $62 Shipped to the US
All Colors, 8.5" LED Strips: $55 Shipped to the US
EL Wire except Coral and Turquoise: $40 Shipped to the US
EL Wire - Coral/Turquoise: $30 Shipped to the US
EL Wire Custom Design (Curves, Zig Zag, etc.): $45 Shipped to the US

All prices are subject to change, but I'm planning on starting to produce these at these prices if enough interest forms by the first week or so of May. I'll have pictures of a prototype up as soon as my FS section things sell. If this generates enough interest along with my FS section items selling, I'll start putting these together as early as next week.

Let's start a list shall we?

Just FYI, in California there can be absolutely no blue lighting being shown anywhere on the car (that you can see from the outside) and nothing red that you can see from the front. I know that other states have similar/the same laws as we do also.

Make sure you get permission from a moderator before moving forward with this, if you haven't already wink.gif
^Will do, again, if it generates enough interest. Also, it's not technically a group buy since I'll be doing them to order...does that still require moderator permission?

@SwissFerdi: Yeah, I know in some states, officers use that rule as a catch all node and say "You can't have lights outside your car, you could impersonate an officer" but it really only applies to blue I think. Not sure of the exact technicalities on it. I searched the NYS DMV site a while ago about my neon kit and couldn't find anything about it listed.

Nonetheless, it would be at the owner's discretion as to when to have these on/off, I would recommend wiring it to it's own switch (as I will be with the prototype) and not to a constant 12v source.

But my avatar is CUSTOM! JDM, BROSKI!

Haha and alright. The only reason I know these odd rules and regulations is that I used to own a P71 (cop car) and it had the push bar, spotlights, cage in the back, the whole deal. Cops would pull me over all the time and check if I had any illegal lights that I could be impersonating a cop with. That's when I got sick of it and bough a Celica. biggrin.gif

No, all the images of the lighting material I posted are from Streetglow, and is the exact same quality I'll be using in all my materials. If Streetglow stuff looks like walmart quality to you...well, you don't have to buy anything.

Should have prototype running in a couple weeks, as mentioned before, I'm short on cash right now.
