I've just been hearing a lot about it and I wanna know why? Is it beneficial, or just for looks?

somewhat.

You stretch a tire so you can fit a wider wheel inside your fender. For instance, I have a 9.5J +23 offset wheel stuffed in the rear of the celica. You wont fit a 255 tire under that at all.

but the original reason came from Japan, many many many many years ago. Long before this HellaFlush jank started. Both for looks, but mostly from drifters trying to fit whatever tire they could find on the wheel so they can keep on going.

^ true for some others its cheaper to buy really or because wider tires are hard to find.
