it depends what type of intercooler you choose!!
if its air-to-air IC from regular ST185 or Caldina, then you HAVE to use IC that sucks air inside and through the intercooler!!! otherwise you would kill your engine as soon as it warmed up and you gave it a full throttle pull!
if its water-to-air intercooler from st165, st185 CS/RC or ST205, you can live without it the bonnet. but its not optimal, since the vent on the st205 bonnet is to suck air out of the car. otherwise there would be a lot of pressure in the enginebay and both IC front water cooler and engine radiator would have very little air flow to cool down and you would soon see some cooling problems!
in short:
air-to-air intercooler - MUST USE bonnet with reverse scoop like st185 (and all subaru cars)
water-to-air = st205 bonnet!

just use a front mount intercooler either way, unless you are going with a 3rd gen, i would suggest keeping the water to air.
i CAN however tell you this, since i swaped i have always ran a FMIC. at first i had the ST205 hood on my car and it cooled the engine bay down significantlly. when i put the stock hood back on, and ran the car for a while, i could not even touch the strut bar because it was so damn hot.
that gt-4 hood is very functional, and either way it will pull cooler air into the bay. It is not NEEDED to do a swap, as you can see many people running stock hoods with swaps, but i would highly suggest either running a FMIC, W2A, or either one with the gt-4 hood.

i'm also curious on this... wrc 3rd rev 3s-gte... my hood doesn't close all the way unless it's up on spacers at the hinges (as she is right now). how does one get the damn thing to close properly short of getting the gt-4 hood, or is that hood REQUIRED for proper fitment with the oem w2a intercooler?
forget the hood, to you guys its all aesthetics. it comes from rallying where highly strung 350+ HP engines run at high power for long periods of time and engine bay heat becomes an issue.
Unless you plan on running your engine at 7000+ RPM with ultra stoich AFR's (on the brink of detonation with maximum ignition advance) and 22+ psi all day long then yeah you might have a heat problem.
And no, no fitment issues. a 3 point strut brace sits higher than the charge cooler, yet every man and his dog has one, and only a handful have gt4 hoods.
