Convertible Top Help - 6G Celicas Forums

I'm semi new to the site and Ive been reading other posts on ideas of what to do to my celi smile.gif
Unfortunately my top gave way today. I press the button and i hear nothing not even the motor trying to work. Funny thing is it worked the day before when I put the top up and down to mess with the regulators on the driver side which I need to replace as well ;x. I'm wondering if the switch or if theres a fuse that might be blown? I was using the search feature to look through old posts so i wouldnt be reposting something someone may have covered beforehand. Had no luck but found a nifty guide to changing the regulators just have to find the damn part. Well back to my top i press the button and nothing and I dont even hear the motors at all. Any ideas on what may have happened?

Edit: the rear windows still function going up and down so I'm clueless as to what's going on.

Did you check the manual/auto switch in the trunk?
Yes I did

edit: checked all the fuses today they're fine as well.

its odd that you dont hear either motors going, the odds of both of them going out at the same exact time are slim to none from what i would guess. make sure your vert top switch in the front is connected it might have came loose

I checked the switch as well it is connected. Do you think the switch can go bad? I doubt it's the motors because they were working fine beforehand no struggling at all to put the top down and up. Thanks for the response mate!
I haven't heard of the switch going bad, but in my vert I have had to pull the little side window switches several times to scrape off the carbon and put them back together. Maybe you might want to try that. Best of luck.

where were you getting carbon?!? and i would double check every fuse just to see if you have any burn out ones

where were you getting carbon?!? and i would double check every fuse just to see if you have any burn out ones

Yeah, definitely check all the fuses. There is no chance in a hell that both motors gave up at the same time. the symptoms are more likely that the whole system is not getting any power.
If you are 100% sure that all the fuses are good, I'd take voltmeter and start at the motor's contacts and follow the lines to see if there's any power.

Yeah it's what I plan on doing with my day off of work/school tommorow hopefully i find out whats wrong.
carbon in inside the switch. I had to pull the switch out of the dash. they take the switch apart. You can do this carefully by using a flat head screwdriver and pulling the inside part of the switch out. Inside there are two rockers which are made of copper and have silver colored contacts. I cleaned all the contacts, but in a little di-electric grease and then put the whole thing back together.
My '97 did the same thing today, neither motor makes noise and the damn "fasten seat belt" light stays on; WTF little car!? Did you ever find a solution?

I am pretty sure you have to have all the window connectors connected for the rear windows and top to function.
I had the rear windows DISCONNECTED for the last year, and connected them again last week. Everything (except the rear windows) worked fine until yesterday.

I found out (the hard way) that overloading the trunk for a road trip can put pressure on the back wall, which can trigger the shutoff switch for power top. I'd only had the car a couple weeks when it happened. Any guides for window switch replacement? Previous owner replaced a rear window switch, but installed it upside down.
