full size spare in hatch - 6G Celicas Forums

Topic #76162 11 posts Started by 96stgreendemon
So a few weeks ago i watched a friend with a lowered civic hobble home on a donut and im gonna be honest it scared the crap out of me thinking that that could happen to me, so im going to prevent it.
i have this idea in my head of how exactly to put a full size spare in my trunk in place of the donut.
thinking about pulling the piece of wood in the hatch, cutting a hole in the middle of it where the tire will go and then getting some fiberglass and resin to mold it around the tire as well as reinforcing the bottom of the board so it would still have no issues supporting weight of objects in the trunk.
has anyone done this before but i was curious to if anyone had any thoughts or ideas of how to make this better, all input is welcome

I haven't seen the hole below my subs in... well like ever lol. Is the hole wide enough for a the wheel you plan to put in there?
Other wise it should work great smile.gif... i dont even think i could get to my spare.... scary tongue.gif

The European Celicas got full size spares, and I'm fairly sure that JDM Celicas did too. They have an OEM cover for it. I'd see if you couldn't source one of those before trying to build your own without a mold, although it might be little difficult to find.

save all the work, toyota had full spare equip in canada and europe, so get in contact with some of those members I'm sure you can get the parts from them.
Yea My car Came with a full size spare as well.
im sure you could just buy the spare section off someone parting out and cut it and weld it in place of yours.
I thought all celicas had full size spares

the spare on the european st is a 14 inch rim with a tire that looks normal (size) buts its some kind of cheap rubber thing, so dont expect to drive with it for long time or go over 90km/H
Mine came with a full sized spare and the mold carpet for a full size spare too. Nut sure whats your deal tho.

I agree with jordisonjr's idea, maybe it'd be much simpler, and would actually be much lighter than a molded one...
