Photo Request: Black Housing Projector Headlights - 6G Celicas Forums

Topic #76563 32 posts Started by jcbass7
I was removing the lense from my projector and the heat messed up the chrome finish on the side part so I am looking for pictures of projector headlights (stock ones) blacked out.. something like this..

or more like this since my car is red and will stay red (or maybe black)

I don't know if I want to do it, just thought I'd look into it. I don't want the glass tinted, but the housing painted.

here is what happened and why i am seeking the pics..

When I removed the lense, the boiling water removed some of the paint.. I guess I can spray it with chrome paint? Since that part is behind the wavy part of the lense anyways?
the silicone seal gave out in mine and ruined the chrome plating. i did a bit of searching and if you paint the shoud with chrome paint you won't get the same finish as the original. you'll need to have the shrouds vacuum plated. there's only one place in Canada that does it and i got mine sent there. cost me $300 CDN to do both sides but in the end they turned out great and about 99% of the original finish quality.

Maybe I will just spray that one small spot so that its not so bad. I can't afford to get both of them re-done right now, and feel like it will look ok behind the blurred glass on that part. I'm really bummed out that this happened, I figured I would convert them while they weren't on my car.

Did Romas ever spray the housings black? I thought he had. Without pictures I am incredibly reluctant since I think it might now go over well with the separate highs/lows that we have.
you're lucky it's in the blurred part of the lense.. then it's not so bad. even touch up silver paint will do a decent job.

I dunno, that black housing on the red looks good, but thats me.
I think the black housing looks good on the Audi too, but only because so much of the front fascia is black. Going on your Celica, I think just a refinished silver or chrome would look best.

True, the fascia ties it in, but i think that a ssIII grille would almost achieve the same effect.....almost.
wow, glad that did not happen to me.

lucky! i cant find one anywhere!!!!
So, im bored and I decided to see what a black chrome housing would look like one a red celica. Yeah, I wouldnt do it, looks like the car got punched right in the face. Keep in mind that my PS skills are not all that great, but take a look.

Although I cant say its 100%, but gives a good idea on what that would look like. Maybe a matte would look much better?
BTW, thanks goes to manphibian, because it was the best projector looking shot I could find quickly.....

i think if the projector light with black housing would look nice...i have a white celica, so black and white matches better. with the outter shroud in black and the inner part where the projector is being chrome still will look nice...that way the light emitting out still goes out strong instead of have the light ray absorb by the black.
I think it would look weird without doing the high beams too and those blacked out would just look.. bad? in my opinion.

I think ill just touch up that small section of that light with something like this:

My chrome finish was flaking also and I sprayed the housing gloss black

I don't recommend blacking out the whole high beam housing as highbeams use the reflective back of the housing to direct light outwards...however spraying the outer chromes is fine..I did that in mine and you can sort of see that in the 3rd pic

thanks nammer, i been looking for someone that did that! also, did you tint your low beams? looks like it...

i will be blacking mine out as soon as i get them, also for the OP ive always been told putting them in an oven to like 300* gets the glue soft better. (and putting the glass back in to reheat the glue also)

it's not exactly what you're asking but pretty close

thanks Gerald, that is...but it's reversed...lol, only if the silver chrome on the low was black and the inner part where the projector and the park light would be chrome....
Aww, Jesse, your projectors are shot... Completely ruined. That sucks. The only viable option now is just to put them in a box and mail them to me. biggrin.gif

I personally think it would look good. The chrome part that came off is there to reflect the light from the DRL, so if you plan on running the DRL/parking light there, you'll need to repaint it chrome. If you aren't going to use that light, by all means, paint it black and see how it turns out. If you don't like it, you can always repaint it chrome to make it look decent from a distance until you get the money to sent them off to have them repaired.

chrome peeled off with tape... cant tell here but it didnt look good wound up painting over it, but had a ghost emblem look when i was done

gonna do highs next.

east, that actually looks pretty good. I'm tempted.. gonna get a few quotes for replating them first, but might do that..

What part of NOVA are you from? For some reason I could have sworn I saw you this summer. I was in Fairfax/Burke area in August for a week.

jc, i would go ahead and paint them, think about it, 300 bucks for replating?! (or however much it costs)

vs doing it yourself for the price of some primer, some 230 grit sandpaper, some good krylon spraypaint (or whatever u want) and the cost to operate your oven tongue.gif

something like a swap, depending on case i understand, but ive learned from the guys on here when u can do it yourself, dont let fear stop you. ive FINALLY learned that, and encourage every member to do it. all it takes is a little artistic inclination and boom!

No, they are not tinted...it's probably looks that way due to the lighting and the black housing

To remove the lens, i used a cheap heat gun. heat it up evenly and pry it open gently with a cloth and wide flathead screwdriver...pry slowly bit by bit going around a few times..if you rush it you can chip the glass at the edges...
