I know how you feel as well, I had the same situation except I was at fault. I was in a construction zone where there were raised manhole covers, I was about 4 car lengths behind the person in front of me, and I went to in between two of the raised covers because they were side by side, and wide enough for me to fit through. So I went through, not paying attention to what was going on in front of me, I looked back up, and there was a Jeep Cheroke dead stopped two car lengths infront of me. Hit the brakes, skidded and wham. It wasn't a good site after the accident, but I fixed her back up.

I had to replace the hood, driver's side fender, all four head lights, radiator, radiator support, bumper, turn signals, crash bar, framerail adapters, coolant reseviour, airbag in the dash, got a non airbag steering wheel, got my window replaced, and had some other odds and ends as well. I got lucky, and bought a full parts car for $450 and did all the work myself. Then I parted out the car I bought and made my money back.
