Well turns out the bores are in need of honing. .020. No more stock pistons. The crank also needed some work, so it's all back at the machine shop.
I bought a set of Weisco 86.5 9:1 pistons, and Eagle H beam rods. They'll be assembled with ACL Race bearings.
So much for an easy stock build.

Yeah, this is more like angry money now. The most over-built stock build. Ever.
Pistons and rods came in yesterday. Still waiting for the machine shop to let me know if I need oversized bearings.
Probably will go down to Goodwill and see if I can find a food scale on the cheap and weigh out the pistons and rods to balance them.
For now:

Why not let the machine shop balance the rods, pistons, and crank all together?
2000 Celica GTS 'slowest gts evar'1998 Mazda 626 FS-DE/CD4-E
The machine shop isn't assembling the bottom end.
They will be balancing these to the crank. I'm just going to weigh out the rods (the pistons are all 365 grams) and mark them. The machine shop will then tell me which set goes where in relation to the crank.

My friend just wrapped up ceramic coating some parts for me.

Parts turned out really nice.

Amazing! How much does he charge for a valve cover? Is it just spray on or does it need to be baked like powder coat?
2000 Celica GTS 'slowest gts evar'1998 Mazda 626 FS-DE/CD4-E
The downpipe and valve cover needed to be baked to cure. The other pieces were air cured @75 degrees+ for 24 hours.
I got the homey hookup on all of it, but I can ask.
Still waiting for the block to come back from the machine shop. Loosely assembled the head for inspiration.

Due to the camber plates I put up front, I couldn't pull enough negative camber out. I had a pair of smaller crash bolts in my toolbox from the FRS, so I threw those in the front. Still needs an official alignment, but I'd say I eyeballed it 95% of the way.

Also, this arrived.

If the wheel was straight you're way toed out from the change in camber, easy to fix. Add a tiny bit of toe in and it'll even the wear across the tires for street use.

Sweet jumping Jesus. 9 weeks after I dropped the block off at the machine shop, they have finally finished it.
The bores were done, crank was polished. New freeze plugs, new paint, although the paint looks crappy. Pistons and rods were balanced.

Waiting on the ACL rod and main bearings to arrive to start assembling.
I have a wall of parts waiting to go on.

I also took some time over the last two months and painted the transmission, as well as the mounts. I also purchased a new mechanical speed sensor and swapped out the electrical unit that was there.

They knew the engine was going into the MR2 and it wouldn't be seen anyway, let's go with that.

I found these online about a month ago and decided I needed them. They're on a boat, taking their sweet time from Thailand.

And because it is always raining in Seattle:

Nice score on the seats.
I thought it was always sleepless in Seattle? Or maybe it's both.
2001 Miata LS 5-speed
Where'd you source the seats through? I've been keeping an eye out on seat options, but have mostly been checking on eBay and one of the MR2 forums I think.

I found them on eBay, and I messaged the seller saying that their price was bit steep, and that I would buy them for X amount right now.
They sent me a PayPal invoice for the seats, took the listing down, and that was that.
These are SR-Zero seats. I believe DB8 has a bunch of goodies on MR2OC.

yeah, DB8 was the one I was thinking about. I have his thread bookmarked and just waiting til he comes across something that I like.

My automotive genius buddy came over and we installed the crank and knocked the pistons and rods in. All of the clearances were within spec and went together easily. Torqued down the ARP head bolts and just placed the valve cover on for now.

You think they're better than the Dunlop Z2?

You think they're better than the Dunlop Z2?
RE760s arent even in the same class as the Star Specs.
Are they better than Z2s in terms of longevity? Of course. Are they as sticky? Not even close. Its all about what you want out of a tire.

^ yup, for what i'm wanting they're fine. not the best tires you can get but my celi is also not a track car or anything other than an occasional weekend driver.

I must be doing it wrong. Almost 20k miles on my Z2 and only 1/3 worn off. I daily those bitches like 5k a year and took a 1600 mile road trip with them too this summer

. I'm addicted to the awesome traction they have, casually rolling up to a 4 way stop at 55mph and just stopping in the last 70feet like its nothing or taking turns at 30mph that should be 15mph turns like a sharp right hander from a main to side road.
I think everyone needs to try some redic sticky tires on their car at least once in their life. It's a blast even on a car as slow as mine is.
2000 Celica GTS 'slowest gts evar'1998 Mazda 626 FS-DE/CD4-E
I had Hankook RS2's on the FR-S for about 10K miles... until they were bald. Super sticky, and very sketchy in the rain.
Corners were a blast, but I don't go balls to the wall in turns in the MR2. Something something snap oversteer. I make sure I enter the corner slower than I'd like, and then just accelerate through the apex. The redesigned rear suspension will help, and getting rid of the crap coilovers in favor of the KWs has already helped a great deal, but I still need to put a set of RCAs on.

Having experienced snap over steer I will tell you that it sucks balls.

I wasnt feeling super motivated today, so I only did a little bit on the engine.
Installed the fuel injectors after replacing all of their o-rings and lubing them up. Replaced all of the hardware with stainless bolts.

I chased the threads for the manifold studs and installed new studs and nuts. I then cleaned up and painted the coolant lines. Couldnt find the hardware, so I used more stainless bolts that were meant for the stock intercooler piping.
