Custom Rear Diffuser - 6G Celicas Forums

step 1:

make a base using hardboard



step 2:

measure and cut some MDF fins



set em at an angle of 7 degrees







Step 4:

add a bit of extension to ensure diffuser doesn't become an air brake



step 5:

take off and fastern all screws



Step 6:

Fiberglass the bastward with 2 layers



now i'll let it dry for 24 hours before applying and body filler

right, did some more fiberglassin.......

here's what really happened, used the wooden diffuser as a cast and made a full FG one, cause a wooden diffuser is to "BARRY", the FG diffuser is light as a feather, strong as steel......now gonna use some FG filler to smooth it out.......fits like a glove



the amount of sanding to do was astranomical.......anywayz, enough wingin

all sanded and smoothened



and all painted, cleared three coats but no pic of that, looks the same wink.gif

Woww that's really nice! And what you have to apply to the wood so the fiberglass won't stick to it?
cheers for all the posotive replies fellas, to keep the FG from sticking to the wood, i neatelt covered everything in kitchen foil with the shiney side out so when the FG settles it just peels off, feel free to post here or pm me if anyone needs any help
Wow that looks awesome, great work, But i do have to agree that the fins should be smaller, other than that its awesome, but do you feel any difference?

i wanted the fins to be more meaty than just pieces of sheet metal, that woulda been too easy, so straight sheet metal for base and cut and rivet the fins on, as for difference, i did all the maths and flow tests in CFD to get the perfect fin angle and height of diffuser from ground, i dont thrash the car a lot so never noticed real difference, but if the needle does go t the right side of the speedo, the car feels as planted as ever
very nice work. i think i might do this in the near future. and i like the thickness of the fins, its more visible(lookswise) and i doubt having thinner fins have any advantage. so you say 7degrees is the magic number?

7 degrees was the magic numer as per my mate who knows CFD

as for making some for sale, i already tried it, if i was to make and sell 10 diffusers at very very min profit, it would cost £250 including postage, thats just UK postage, because of the high price, i didnt make any or sell any, price was so high cause according to a fiberglass expert the mould would cost to much to be made and bla bla, so i just droped the idea, but if anyone's lookingt o make their own, i can help, its simple enough

I wonder if a homemade design such as this, without any tweaking to the base surface of the diffuser, could have any true aero advantage. I know Ray's does, but his company tweaked the contour for less drag. This just has strategically placed fins but is otherwise a flat surface. Looks sweet though.

Thanks man thought some sort of release agent was required!
Prior to laying anything in your mould, coat the inside with a release agent.
