Hi Guys,
I think my water pump is going. it just started making this squealing noise yesterday. I was wondering if anyone has changed theirs before and what is involved in doing it.
any replies would be appreciated.

Well from what i remember as i had to change mine after i rebuilt the engine cause it was leaking. Cam covers off, timing belt off, remove the alternator, remove the hyd tensioner, remove the pump. Then put the new pump on, make sure you get the OEM gasket which is metal well it is on the 3rd gen atleast, i put a load of gasket seal on the gasket to make sure it didn't leak, put the hyd tensioner on you will need a vice to make the plunger go back in and make sure you have a thin allen key to keep the piston retracted, put the belt on make sure you have put marks on the belt and pulleys to make sure they stay in the correct postion to keep the timing right. Once you are happy pull the allen key on the hyd tensioner which will tighten up the belt, be aware getting the belt on may be a pain in arse if it isn't you have probably done it wrong haha.

From there put the alternator and the other belt back on etc

These are good tips. Mark the old belt, that is really the key to saving yourself a lot of headaches.
If you don't have a vice, you can use a big c-clamp to compress the tensioner.

I could never get it to retract with C/G clamp, the tensioner was always proper nails to get back in, probably wasn't using a big enough clamp.

Also having a cam pulley tool is quite handy.

Thanks guys for the quick reply. I was hoping I didn't have to mess with the timing belt. its just something about the word "timing" that scares me. I'm debating if I should just leave this to the professionals, even though I don't like them touching the car. I have done a lot of work on the car myself, but not much in that area other than thermostat, alternator and power steering pump replacement.
Can this be done in an afternoon or is it all day vs operator dependent?

Afternoon should be fine, if you are ok with a spanner and got plenty of them hanging around then you will be fine, always good to have a whole day free just in case you run into difficulties but i think i did mine in a few hours but i'm very familiar with the engine. Also i'm not sure on the 2nd gen but there is a phillips head screw in the pump that you need to take off, it can be a penis to get out as it rounds off half the time, just make sure you have a dumpy phillips screw driver.

Oh yeh forgot the crank pulley, this can be great fun, you will need a 19mm socket to get this lad off, try make it an impact socket as i've cracked two sockets trying to get the damn thing off. What i did was put the car in gear, put the brakes on using a bar to wedge the peddle and get a big wrench on it and loosen it off, don't do this when you have jacked it up whatever you do!

Another trick to getting this off i've heard about is get a wrench on the bolt and get some to turn her over while you hang on to the wrench.

^^ a impact always does the trick. Honestly if your doing the water pump replace the timing belt if you havn't recently. When you compress the tensioner compress it slowly if doing it to quick you can damage those hydraulic tensioners from what i hear.

Ele, havent seen you in here in awhile. I would recommend you use toyota parts only. Anything else is NO DICE!! I believe toyota sells the water pump assembly too, that comes with the coolant neck instead of just the water pump. It makes things soo much easier. Easiest way get some zip ties and zip tie the timing belt to the Cam gears so you won't lose where it goes. Loosen timing belt and remove water pump. Done this process a million times because of leaking from the NAPA water pump on the 5sgte build. Learned from that mistake '

Thanks Will, I might just get the whole assembly. I always use toyota parts. Michigan is not bad, will be done here in the summer!! Don't know where to next, maybe public health or armed forces? I'm seriously considering the 3rd gen, but this 2nd gen engine has been good to me even after a good 110,000miles since the swap, it still runs strong, so i'm kinda undecided. But I feel like rewarding myself after 3 gruesome years of training, with a 3rd gen. Anyway I will let you guys know how the pump replacement goes.

the 2nd gen block is supposedly stronger, can't confirm that but its a common belief on the gt4 forum
