ST drums to GT discs - 6G Celicas Forums

Topic #77398 24 posts Started by HectortheRican
I was talking to a brake guy about doing it, and he said that I'd have to do all this extra stuff that wasn't in the how-to to make it work. Like I'd have to get a brake booster from a GT, etc. Basically the whole GT braking system. So my question is, to my fellow ST guys, after installing the GT rear discs, has everything been well? Brakes performing perfectly? Because I'm going to do it in the near future.

We don't drive hOndas, brake master is the same amongst the st and gt. Brake bias might change but only by a minute amount. Now by replacing the st front brakes with a gt setup bias will be the same as a gt.

basically use the rear hubs and ebrake lines and swap them out for the st stuff

I know that man. I know what to do, I've read the how-to several times. My question is if anyone has had any problems with braking performance or e-brake reliability. Things like that.

What you HAVE TO HAVE:
Caliper
Rotor
backing plate
ebrake hardware
GT brake lines

What you COULD have to make your life nicer:
Gt ebrake cable(don't attempt to call me on this one as ive been running a moded ST cable for 6 months now)
GT proportioning valve

Ive been running GT front and rear brakes for a good 6 months now and i have to say it is an AWESOME mod. I did get the whole system for crazy cheap but i notice a BIG difference in the braking power, and i'm not sure if its the rear disks or the fronts.(i do have to say the front GT caliper looks like it could eat the ST caliper, as well as the rotor having a slightly larger diameter.)

If you wanna be thorough about it - change the proportioning valve like Suprakid said.
Other than that the systems are the same.
If you REALLY wanna do it right - change the front calipers and rotors to GT

Does anyone know any cheap places to buy proportioning valves?

Same

And I guess I'll do all four then! I'll do it in the summer when I actually have money.

It'll work fine and be improved in the meantime. I'd check the parts houses [O'reilley's, Autozone etc] for a reman'd first. You might be surprised how cheap they are.
Otherwise - I have a full set of GT Brakes in my garage. Contact Ngofcukinway for pricing info.

Hopefully they're there in the summer because I don't wanna buy anything ahead of time just in case if I need the money since I'm away from home with no job since I'm going to school full time.

if your short on cash just get a nice set of hawk hps brake pads for the front. Made braking for me quite better

Can someone show me a comparison between the ST front rotor and caliper vs the GT front rotor and caliper?

No reason to think they wouldn't be - they've been there for a year now laugh.gif

Om nom nom nom little st caliper

The gt rotor is roughly 1" bigger in radius. And a tiny bit wider, maybe a 1/8". (this picture is with the ST rotor sitting on the studs backwards to compare diameter)

Bump on this since i really dont want to start another thread, Where exactly is the proportioning valve at? and what does it do?

IIRC its attached to the master cylinder, id have to go look. It gives a certain % amount of pressure to the front/rear...On the ST the pressure in the rear is less than on the GT.

Just as a heads up tonight i got into a bit of a situation and the GT brakes saved my front end, im positive my ST brakes would not have(as ive had an accident) :\..

so you can use the st e- brake cables on the gt rear disc swap?
and the front swap is just rotors and fully loaded calipers?
if you use the ST parking brake it will basically be wrigged up, use the gt cable, i thought i could use the St cable and it cost me a few extra hours

dose any one know the casting nubers for the gt front and rear calipers?
I used the ST cables only because the car i got the parts off of was impossible to jack up to get the cables. And i can hear the brake pads making noise once and a while because of it.
