I have a 95 GT celica. I have been having a hard time getting the car into second gear when I downshift. It gets stuck and I have to downshift into second and I have to "force it" it also grinds sometimes when I downshift into 4th. The car has 186k on it. I was thinking about changing the tranny fluid does anyone have any recommendations on the best type of tranny fluid?
Hard downshifting into second gear. Fluid change? - 6G Celicas Forums
I'm thinking that you need to replace your clutch, it shouldn't grind when you go in or out of a gear unless you're that bad at shift
(which I hope you're not)
do u rev match??? i also used to grind into third upshifting and downshifting, but since i changed my oil to royal purple synchromax oil, its alot smoother
Other issues are clutch master cylender and shifter cables.
Especially since your having problems with the down gears, theres 2 cables one is for the left to right motion the other is for the up and down motion, the up and down cable, when you pull the shifter to the down gears, the shifter pushes an inner wire towards the gearbox, that wire may be on its way out. When theres no way for it to push 2, 4 and R become very hard to select.
You may also be grinding because of a problem with your clutch master cylender not being able to properly send enough fluid to disengage the clutch. so 1. check your fluid, bleed if necessary and 2. you may need to adjust the push rod.
I'm not saying overlook the tranny fluid, but check these out as well.

yeah, i've never personally had this problem but my friends hyundai accent, 5 speed had this problem. every time he downshifted into second gear it would grind.
one day it wouldn't move at all and we thought his clutch went but we knew it wouldn't just stop driving all of a sudden after driving perfect... ended up being his slave cylinder and he was slowly losing all of his fluid.
after we fixed it and filled it back up and bled everything he was good to go, with no more grinding.

Mine grinds when downshifting into 3rd gear. When i put in my short shifter it actually helped a little bit with the grinding. But i found out that my shift bushing is worn and needs to be replaced, could that be 1 of the causes?
Well, I guess I can start with the bleeding and if that doesnt work I will try to replace the tranny fluid.
So for the bleeding I open the bleed screw have someone press the clutch down to the floor tighten it then release the clutch and repeat right?
