Where to buy a clutch - 6G Celicas Forums

Topic #78556 41 posts Started by jordisonjr
I'm in the market for a new clucth for my basically stock GTS, and I've pretty nuch narrowed it down to the exedy OEM replacement. Only thing is there is no dealer locally thats listed on the exedy website.

So my question is: does anyone know a website that I can order this clutch from?

I know you can get them on ebay, but I don't know if the warranty would still be valid. I don't want to have the clutch put in, then have something go wrong then have to pay again to have the clutch taken out and a new one installed.
So basically I'm looking for somewhere I can order the clucth from that will still value the warranty if something does go wrong.

I'd prefer something in Canada, but if you know some other websites, I'm willing to try those out too.

Yea I saw that before, but would you buy a used clutch?
The whole reason I'm looking for a dealer/store is so there vis still warranty on the clutch..

I've ordered from www.importrp.com with good success. I know i've seen the exedy OE clutches for sale there before.

ki
Do you know anything about their warranty on parts cause i am also looking for a new clutch. I found one EXEDY kit for sale on ebay @ 118 bucks but i just don't know if the seller is trustful.
^ thats my reason for not ordering off ebay.
I've seen good prices, but if itt blows up I want to get a new one or money back on warranty, but exedy only deals with registered dealers for warranty claims.
So I'm kinda iffy about ordering off there.

Don't want my granny'd clutch? I'm offended tongue.gif

South Bend Clutch - http://dxdracingclutches.com/ makes a good clutch. I bought a Kevlar kit for my V6 for $350ish shipped.

lol no its not I don't want yours.
I'm just trying to cover myown ass cause I've had bad luck with having expensive work done on my car going wrong and not being warrantied.
Do they have OEM replacement clutches as well?
Its just a 2.2L with an intake so I really don't need aything crazy.
And I daily drive it to so a stage 1 or stage 2 would do me no good.

Nah, you won't get any OEM spec clutch from SBC. Exedy is your best bet - but buy an OEM Throw out bearing, because the Exedy one is crap.

\So just order a throw out bearing from a dealership?

Yeah, that's what I would do.

I mean, maybe I got a defective TOB, but I'm not going to chance that again. The minimal cost of a new TOB is much better than the labor to remove the transmission to replace it because the Exedy was crap from the start.

yea exactly. throwout bearing cant be much anyways.

by the time you spend the extra on a TOB from toyota, might as well buy an OEM clutch kit.
IIRC they are ~180$.
and they are known to last well over 150k if you know how to drive.

hmm, Okay, I thought the last time I called they wanted some rediculous price for it, but I'm gunna give them a call when I'm out of class.

Just got off the phone with the local dealership and they told me these prices:

Clutch disc: $191.00 CDN
Release Bearing: $93.00 CDN
Clutch Cover: $240.00 CDN

They said all 3 should be changed.

Those prices are rediculous.
Partznet has the disk for ~ 60
The pressure plate ~ 80
And the tob ~50
(and everything is a few dollars cheaper for an st!)
I would order from them, iirc they even have an extra discount for 6gc members ( check the stick in general discussion for more info)
If shipping and customs is a problem, I'm sure one of us could have it shipped here, then ship to you if need be.

::edit::
Depending where you are in Canada, shipping may be cheaper if you order from lithiatoyotaparts.com , they use the same parts system as partznet, and prices are right about the same.
I can also get ya a discount code for them too, if you've never ordered from them online. smile.gif

Install yourself. The learning experience is priceless, and you'll know how to do it from then on. Then when something needs to be done you can decide if you want to do it or not.. because you'll know exactly what it takes to do it.

Agreed. There are a few good threads around with enough solid info in it for even a beginner to do it.

Pressure2: thanks for the links thats exactly what I was looking for.

I'm just worried about doing my own clutch incase I install it wrong and majorly screw something. My mechanic skills are minimal, and the most work I've done was install lowering springs. Is i possible to do with a couple jackstands and basic tools?(Sockets, wrenches etc.)

okay so I priced it out on lithiatoyotaparts.com and its approxiately 260 dollars canadian shipped, haven't checked out partznet yet though, but the prices were basically the same, but shipping will probably be a bit more.

Should I go this route instead of the exedy oem replacement?

When I ordered my clutch from Napa a few years ago, it was an Exedy clutch kit. Also the factory clutches do last forever, mine lasted 178K miles although I did drive mine until I could almost sit and idle in gear at a stop sign.

it really depends on your budget.
the exedy replacement will be fine, provided its installed correctly.
hard to beat the feel of a new OEM clutch tho..its just SOOOO light and slippable.

Isn't that a bad thing that its "slippable" ?

no.
by slippable, i mean that its super easy to ease into gear, the clutch engages very smoothly.
unlike a performance clutch thats more on/off with a hard bite when you engage the clutch.

Former Team 5SFTE pro member ;)13.6@108MPH, 5SFTE Powered
Ohhhhh okay makes sense.
Well I'm pretty sure I"ve decided on the OEM clutch over the excedy replacement.
Gunna order from lithiatoyota parts.
The little extra money will probably be worth it in the long run.

Still haven't decided if I'm gunna do it myself or not though.
Thanks for all the info.

Yup.
If yo call them, they should be able to get you the "kit" with all that and a plastic alignment tool
