Garrett turbo, standard st205 ecu? - 6G Celicas Forums

It's looking more and more like I've blown another CT turbo, and I've had enough

So I have some coin to spend on a new turbo, but not enough for an ECU (cost more than the turbo).

What can I run with basic fuel mods?

GT2860 - Should be a close match to an upgraded CT20b, Shouldn't have to worry about dangerous leaning?

GT2871 - Direct replacement for GT2860, Flows more air than my fuel system can provide, but a good investment for later on when I can afford the ECU

GT2876 - We're already talking high power turbos, why not go straight to the best compressor in the T28 series?

I definitely want Ball Bearing, and I need to run safe boost on stock ECU (for now)

Suggestions?

Very possible... my first plan exactly was OEM ECU + Garrett GT2860 Ball Bearing.

On the stock ECU im sure you could get away with a 255lph pump or maybe/in conjunction with a FPR. Basically if you up the pressure you could push your 540's into the 600 range. That might be enough for fuel requirements.

Or you could run with larger injectors. But nonetheless you would still need to circumvent the boost/fuel cut. Some way of measuring your AFR's as well.

Basically its easily possible to run 350-400bhp without swapping the stock ECU. But you would need to find the right balance of fueling requirements to get there or just stay there safely.

I'm looking to play stock,400WHP sounds nice but i was happy with just the factory 250 engine hp (it's the spoolup and torque that counts for me). I just don't want to be going thru turbos anymore, unwilling to try my luck on a 3rd CT.

I don't really understand why X volume and X amount of air can be a different pressure depending on whats pushing it in, I mean it's not like you change your turbo and all of a sudden your head flows better? But apparently X psi is different air mass from a T28 or any other turbo than a CT.

So I plan to run 12psi which is the included actuator pressure for the GT2860RS and keep an eye on the AFRs.

well I ran my GT30R on stock ecu but my botttom end was forged but that more for reliability wise and it ran fine it's just the ECU unlocks alot more punch.

when I was running 220kw atws I had done no head work and was running standard injectors (and still am)

I have never regretted that purchase and now with more engine mods on the way we will see the benefits

That's good to know. In accordance with this advice, I've given my engineer the go ahead to build me a T28 steampipe manifold and downpipe. We have chosen the GT2871RS with .64a/r rear housing

Ooh, what did he quote you for that? I've been looking at the cheap chinese manifolds on trade me and they all have short 3rd pipes which will heat up Cyl 3 and run it lean, that and badly placed or lack of wastegate port.

So i'm using an adapter until I can afford a full equal length manifold.

I've got a Gt3071r sitting here ready to go on.

We'll have a pretty good lineup of white ST205's soon, Auckland, Wellington and Christchurch!

Hey TRDGT4 how much boost did you run on stock? Did you have boost control, or just spring pressure??

Good things aren't cheap when it comes to turbos.

the stock gen 3 manifold isnt equal length either 2&3 are shorter and by the centre feed design of the manifold 2&3 get fed more aswell. so its hard to get everything the same, also 2&3 have 10psi less compression, so the only option i guess is to run them all rich

I plan to run 12psi spring pressure on the internal gate and keep an eye on afr's

I know!

I think I've spent almost as much as the turbo cost again on all the thing's I need to fit it!

Adapter, wastegate, gaskets, AN fittings, hose, washers, studs, nuts etc.

Will need different piping to my front mount as i'll be clocking down, but not sure what I'll need yet.

How are you running your piping?

Keeping the stock W2A top mount, the IC inlet is going to be cut off and turned around to face towards the right (near the bov port) and the manifold piping is going to bring the turbo up and towards where the battery used to be, allowing for a very short and very straight 3" intake.

An ice box will be mounted in the cabin (probably by the passenger feet or in the boot next to the battery) and plumbed in between the IC rad and the charge cooler with a bosch water pump.

never run the Garrett on a stock engine but my standard setup was running about 16psi but then once I forged the bottom and fitted the Garrett it ran 14psi until I got the Haltech which saw 18 and then 20psi.

how long did you run until you got the haltech? could you floor it or did you have to nurse it everywhere? was it ok?

I think it was like two or three months before Haltech but ran fine boosted well but wanted to go further now look where we are lol

Standard Genuine Toyota Headgasket and New Genuine Toyota Head bolts

Sweeet, I'm sure 14psi on this beast is gonna be better than 16psi on the CT.

Damn CT, what a piece of crap lol

What do you guys think .64 A/R exhaust or the .86? I'm not getting cams on this engine don't plan to open it

Heard that so many times! lol

As far as your a/r goes, I chose the .64 but I have a larger exhaust wheel.

So with the GT28 I might lean towards the .86 for more power at the top end, but you should get a nice quick spool with the .64 if you prefer that.

Actually changed my mind, after several discussions with a guy at the turbo shop. 2871 has the lag of a 3071 without the power. the 2860 with the .64 is the only turbo which meets my needs in terms of spool, just short of my goals in terms of max HP but seems to be a reasonable tradeoff.

They say the 2871 and the 2876 work on the SR20DET but just not on the 3S-GTE, Noone can explain why.


Either way, for me it's Disco Potato time

Just received the GT2860RS. It is patheticly small compared to the CT26 on both the intake side and the exhaust side, my engineer is going to have a fun time trying to get 4 fat runners onto a tiny T25/T28 flange at the same time being able to fit the mounting studs!

Even on the intake side the compressor outlet is a peashooter and is even smaller than the intercooler inlet!

Somehow I feel like this turbo was a mistake, however we'll see what happens. The goal is spoolup before 3000rpm with 300 WHP in the top end with management, and hopefully atleast 250WHP untuned.

With the small turbine exducer, it seems my 3" exhaust is way too big

I actually saw that car yesterday, he lives near me tongue.gif

it has a black hood now and a sick exhaust system, not sure how fast it is, but it definately looks and sounds nice.
