Some of you guys might know my problem...atleast the major one,
my engine ran out of oil and started making this noise,

ever since that day, i drove my car to my autotech class and its just been sitting there, and waiting on a new engine...

NOW, my dads 01 Audi A6TT is leaking oil and makes the same noise[ when its low/nearly empty on oil
we add 3-4 quarts and the noise stops...

(dont worry about that car its going to the shop soon)

my question is,

if i do another oil change, and maybe add some 'lucus' (or oil thickener?) will be car be normal again?
Or atleast safe to drive?

the damage is done, the bearing is toast. that engine needs a rebuild

2001 Celica GT-S Turbo1997 Supra TT 6speed1997 Celica 3MZ/1MZ swap1990 Celica All-Trac
so there's NO WAY an oil change would save the car?

is it worth trying atleast?

i mean im already preparing/saving money for a new-used motor so..

it doesnt work that way. ill try to explain.

your oil pump provides pressure in the engine. oil passes through journal through the crankshaft to the rod bearings. a very thin layer of oil provides the lubrication between the crank surface and the bearing. when you have no oil then the oil barrier is gone and you have metal on metal contact and friction. thats VERY BAD! very soon after the bearing will bond with the crank and spin inside the rod journal. once that happens you will have metal shaving flying all throughout the system. the engine is a ticking time bomb. the rod is now bouncing around the crankshaft, thats the knocking sound you hear. the damage is done and its only going to get worse. changine the oil is not going to save you

do a search for my thread on rebuilding the 7A-FE. i have over 100 pictures showing these parts to give you an idea whats going on in there

My celica made a similar noise. I dropped the oil pan and found spun bearing. For me, replacing the motor myself was the most cost effective way of getting the car back on the road. Paid about $275 for a motor out of a 93 corolla (though I am still trying to get this thing running lol)

It's possible to have some tappet noises especially when it gets low but that is more than simple tappet noise, does your dads audi tap as loud as your celica is?

My question is why the hell are you letting these cars run out of oil?

Sounds like woman logic to me.

No no, if a bearing was spun, there are more than likely scouring marks on the crank shaft. Crank will either need replaced, or machined. Quite honestly, as cheap as a used engine is, just put a new motor in. You're going to have more money wrapped up in machining costs than what a used engine would cost you.

now with alot of thinking and help, ive decided to change the engine, and then 'rebuild' this engine when i get time...since i wont be in a hurry, i can take my time and money and not cheap out on parts like i did last time...hopefully make a beast out of the old one biggrin.gif

so this brings out another question:

im looking around local junk yards, every time i ask for a celica 2.2, they say around 500-700 is that normal??

i thought our motors were REALLY cheap,

and besides the price, what do i look for when buying the engine, i heard alot of times that "compresion test only tells part of the story"
so besides a compression test, what else should i be looking at?

always appriciate your help guys!

Remove the valve cover and check for sludge.

thank you...

and does anybody know the specs for the compression ratios?

what should the results read?

For Sale:OEM tail lights - make offer
Compression tests are more about uniformity between all the cylinders. Different compression testers will rear differently. As far as the engine i would:
-Check the plugs when you pull them
-Check the oil cap like matt said
-If your taking the tranny drain the fluid and look for metal pieces.

Are you going to pull the engine yourself?Or will the yard do it?

motors should be a lot cheaper than that.. ask for the camry motor (whatever year is appropriate for your car) and see where that gets you on price
