2nd gen 3sgte problem thread... - 6G Celicas Forums

Topic #80183 16 posts Started by garin
first off sorry if this is a repost. i put my 2nd 3sgte back together tonight. went to start it and found that it doesn't hold an idle. if i give it gas every thing is fine, but when i let off the pedal idle falls and eventually the car dies.

eliminated the neutral safety switch as well as boost/vacuum leaks as being the problem. not a fuel issue, or battery concern either! i have two or three grounds in the engine bay. wanna say it's the air flow sensor. any suggestions, or advice is appreciated!

Is your mechanical timing set properly?

ok so i got a different afm on the car. seemed to have helped, but the car eventually dies still. looking into the iac valve/ throttle position sensor. what kinda current should this have to assure that it is good?

It sounds like you have a loose coupler or some type of air leak in the system. Did you recently disconnect any vac lines or intercooler piping? The 2nd gen is very sensitive to these things and will not idle if there is an air leak somewhere.

... and as for those sensors, you can just unplug them. If they are somehow causing an issue, unplugging them will make the car run/idle at its default values. But 99% of the time (assuming you didn't mess with the timing belt), this sort of thing is caused by an air leak in the system.

Mine does the same thing, my iac isn't doing anything and a new one isn't a cheap date... $200 list price for me from napa, or car quest. I just set idle by setting the idle screw to about 900 rpm

He actually fixed his issue but I guess didn't update here. It was just a vac leak.
If you really do need an IAC, I can get you a toyota one for well under list price.

well i mean cost price w/e. Just went to the next thing since he said he ruled out boost/vac leaks. Good to hear its done tho

If there is anything sticking out of the head, stud remover, and a propane torch, lots of pb blaster, and patience will get them out, if they are flush with the head, it gets harder.

I dont bother taking off the exhaust manifold for that exact reason. I just take the turbo off the manifold. Its actually not that hard to do.
