Well my car was running pretty ****ty today, so I tried spraying some carb cleaner in through the intake (I recently changed the plugs, wires,cap and rotor so I knew it wasn't that.) and the car tried to die out liek it should. So I gave it some gas while spraying the carb cleaner and then when i stopped it idle'd normal.

Then out of nowhere the car jumped to like 5500RPM, or something rediculously high, so I ran and shut the car off, unhooked the battery and let it sit for about an hour.

The car now consistantly idles at 3000rpm, and when i turn the ignition off to shut the engine off, it doesn't seems to shut off properly, but almost stalls itself out.

Did I screw a lot of sh!t up?
I guess you can't trust everything you read on these forums cause i've read it multiple posts that you can spray carb cleaner through the intake..

tell exactly what you did.

Started the car, sprayed the carb cleaner in and the car died, exactly as I expected.
Started it up, revved it up a bit and sprayed the cleaner in. stop spraying and stopped reving, the car idle'd normal for a few seconds, then it jumped up really high, almost redline.
Disconnected the battery, let it sit there while i ate supper, went back out and it wa at 3 k. let it sit for say another hour, and it reved to 3k again.

Drove the car around the bay, at 3k idle, and ii basically hit 40km/w without touching the gas pedal

Went back out after about 2 hours, didn't start it yet, jiggled the throttle cable to see if maybe it was stuck, which it wasn't. So I just tried starting it, and it started up, revve to 2k, and now its idling normally again..

First problem. You used carb cleaner. It's too hot of a liquid. You probably destroyed your MAF or another sensor inside. I'd never run it while cleaning simply because you can suck the cleaner where you don't want it to go. Barrymans B12 Chemtool is the best throttle body cleaner I know of that won't kill your MAF or any sensor inside if it gets on it. Just don't run the engine. My guess is that it either damaged the MAF or another vacuum sensor inside when it got sucked into the vac lines.

Was pretty sure 5s didnt have a MAF, just MAP and IAT like the 7a...could be wrong though.

Yeah, I'm not 100% myself. I thought it was on the back, bottom of the throttle body like on my camry, but now I don't remember seeing one. Regardless, it can still screw up the other sensors I it gets sucked into the vacuum lines.

I sprayed it through the short ram intake.
I started it before I got any responses to this thread, and it idled normal again.
Should I be okay to run it like this?

I've sprayed it through another time, and it didn't cause any issues.
And I thought that the 5sfe didn't have a MAF either.

check that your butterfly valve isn't getting stuck...it can get stuck without the throttle cable

The Celica's 5S is definitely MAP and IAT, not MAF.

There's a separate kind of cleaner for the TB, that's what I prefer to use. I assume there's a difference in the chemicals, though I don't know what it is. The directions on the back of the bottle for my TB cleaner say spray it directly in the throttle body while working the butterfly valve back and forth by hand with the motor off. It also says don't continuously spray- only do short blasts. I've noticed the stuff evaporates pretty quickly if there isn't too much of it, so maybe that had something to do with it. If the car is fine now, I'd say lesson learned, no real harm done.

Did you read the instuctions on the cleaner??

The throttle body cleaner I have says not to spray when the engine is running.

Nics: I did read the instruction, but since this was carb cleaner, not throttle body cleaner it was a little different.
But it did say that it was safe to spray on your carb, while running, just turn the idle up.
I figure that would be the same thing as making the car idle higher by opening the throttle up a bit.

But the car is idling normal now, so I guess its alright..

It was just the butteryfly that was stuck. The carb cleaner must of remove all grease and such from the butterfly joints which caused it to be stuck open. After you drove it around a bit it must of regrease it through the oil vapor from your valve cover. Just remeber the only way for a engine to rev so high is a open throttle. Every sensor around your engine can break and it will never rev that high. No air, no spark, no rev.

I was thinking of doing this too so let me get this straight:


1. Remove intake (car switched off)
2. Spray throttle body cleaner inside while playing the the throttle so it gets inside
3. Put everything back in
4. Start car.


Is that right?

This happened to me as well but it was idling @2k rpms. I disconnected the battery terminal as well. It could be the ECU itself, trying to reset itself or something.
