So at first I thought it was my suspension but now am beginning to think it's my engine knocking. it'll knock in 3rd and 4th gear. As I accelerate, the knock will accelerate and vice versa. Am I screwed? If it's knocking, will it make it through winter? I just need it to make it through winter so I can finally do a swap. If I have to granny drive it to make it through, I'll have to. I can't risk having the engine die on me Thanks.

If it keeps knocking, why don't you just open the door and say, "Hello!"



On a more serious note - its a little fishy that the knock only occurs in 3rd & 4th gears... nothing at all in the lower gears? Or even 5th?

nothing in 1st, 2nd, 5th, or R. Slow or quick, 3rd and 4th will knock. It's very annoying. I've had a celica where the valves were ticking but it's nothing like that at all. It's as if there's no oil and it's knocking in a hollow block but I checked and there's oil and coolant is full.

Thats what I mean, if it were the valves, then wouldn't it be knocking all the time & not just in 3rd/4th?

Without seeing it in person, I'm stumped.

Are you sure it's not pinging you're hearing (also known as spark knock?) try a tank of premium? And/or some combustion chamber cleaner to get the excess carbon out. Like Seafoam's DeepCreep or the Amsoil PowerFoam. could be it's so carboned up it's raised the compression to where you have a lot of pinging happening, It'd be under more of a load in the higher gears?

do you notice anykinds of odd shakes in 3/4 gear cuz if its only in those 2 gears them It might be in the trans mot the motor

try to take a video of the sound, easier to point the sound with audio...but for you try either a mechanics stethascope or a tube put to your ear to hear the engine at idle then have some one bring it to the engine speed it would be when the knocking is happening... then you can see if its from engine or not. also try rolling in 3rd or 4th and shift into neutral and see if the knocking is still there, if not its probably your trans.good luck sorry i cant help further.

well what do ya know, 2nd gear just got the knock. drove it home from work 20 minutes ago and heard it. what does "pinging" sound like? i know my water pump is buzzing, telling me "REPLACE ME" but it'll last until spring. Spark plugs were replaced right before I stored it. Otherwise sounds like it's coming from the bottom of the driver side. Tranny shifts good. I'd record but dont have a camera Shoot! I'll try something.

lol. Pinging sounds like a chain dragging across a glass.

I've had my celica for 6+ years, the valves have ticked the whole time

EDIT: drop a real **** gear change from 2 or early 3rd to 5th and floor it. The rattle sound is pinging
