Axle Rattle - 6G Celicas Forums

Topic #82450 28 posts Started by JasonX
Hi everyone,
when I am in neutral and revving, I hear a rattle from the passenger side axle. I raised the car and put pressure against the axle and that stopped the rattle. I started looking to see what's missing and i think something is not right with the mounting of the bracket.

Thanks everyone

could the bolts to the axle bearing mount be loose?
Possibly. Thank you.

How many bolts hold the bracket against the block? I only have one on there. And on the lower part of the bracket there is a bolt hole that doesn't match up with anything.
there should be a total of 3 bolts. hmmm... thats strange, they should line up perfectly to the block unless someone has changed that mount before you and put in the wrong one?

>I'll have to check that out again. Also, does yours have a long bar connecting to it, like another support. I saw that at the junk yard on camrys but didn't see any celicas there.

Well I just changed my pass side axle as it broke and grease flew everywhere. There is a long bar to the bearing (3 bolts hold the bearing to the frame) then the axle goes into the tranny that is it. I had to pull the bracket to get my seal puller in for the tranny.
All 3 have a bolt. You must have lost 2 of them.

added more info and photos to original post.
I couldn't find any celicas at the junk yards here to reference. So, if someone gets a chance to take a photo of theirs, that would be super great. Thanks.
I can't get a good photo from when I pulled one of my engines, but there are only two bolts that mount it to the block. The 3 hole on the left side doesn't get used
Thank you for your answer. That clears up my confusion, lol. Also, on the camry there was a support bar coming to it. Is it really necessary?

Got the second bolt in and still a loud rattle. I am stumped. Guess car is going into a dealer, 'cause no one can figure it out.
well the bearing could be going back in it or the wheel bearing is going bad. could be many different things.
I don't think wheel bearing could rattle when revving at stand still, right? Must be something with the axle since if I put pressure against it, the rattle stops. The axle was replaced recently and it's still making the sound. It was probably a refurbished axle, so I guess it just could be a bad one. The axle is solid closer to the transmission and it's not so solid after the bearing, closer to the wheel. I'm not a mechanic by any means, so I'm just making stuff up, lol. It would be a good feeling if I got it right for a change, hahaha.

i'm starting to think that odds of having a bad axle is low and moving towards a bad rack and pinion as I read "rattling while decelerating at any or all speeds may be a sign". Will get that checked this week.
So, do you guys think rack and pinion could cause rattles that is unrelated to speed?
Are the axles for the 5sfe celica and 5sfe camry the same?
No. They're different. (at least they should be. I'll confirm on Monday)

This rattle is driving me crazy. So, I'm thinking of all the things that were done to the car to figure out what can cause it. I remember one time a shop was having difficulty doing the wheel bearing on that side. I don't think they did a good job. Could that have anything to do with it? The axle shaft has some play in it between the axle bearing and the wheel when I shake it with my hand. when I put pressure on the axle half shaft with my hand the rattle stops. Does axle go into the wheel bearing? if the wheel bearing is no good, could it cause this play? CV Joint? Something needs adjustment?

thank you. I had no luck at the junk yard to reference. If you ever get a chance, could you please snap a shot of it? Thanks again.

No more rattle smile.gif I asked the shop to change the axle as I was suspecting the bearing being bad. Also, I am not sure if the automatic and manual transmission axles are the same, but since I got it converted to manual, I asked to get it for the manual. They also said my axle brackets were incorrect and put in the correct ones. Now, it's nice and quiet again after a year of rattling. Thank you.

Haven't been under the car yet, but once I do this week, I will take some photos to show what may have changed.
