It wont stop rain from getting to your header. It's kinda of puzzled me since toyota put the air vent but from factory, it comes with a heat insulator on the inside of the hood (like ST202) as well as a catch plastic so that the water will flow downward towards the radiator. Wish I had pictures of it. I used to have it...
if you can find this much better than the rain deflector as it will keep all of the rain out from reaching your header

All GT-Fours came with a plastic cover mounted between the hood grill and the hood insulation. It catches rain water and directs it to the front where it falls on the radiator improving cooling. However, this weakens the end tank of an oem radiator due to the changes in temperature (expansion and compression particularly in cold weather climate) on the composite material. After 2 years my oem rad developed a crack causing the engine to spew out coolant when it was about -40 degrees. so I purchased a metal radiator (from performanceradiator.com aka USA Radiator). Most people remove this plastic cover as it improves cooling by releasing the hot air trapped in the engine bay. There is no real potential hazard with rain or snow falling through since rain drops and snow flakes will quickly evaporate as it reaches or comes in contact with the header or heat shield. If your car can withstand an engine bay wash, then it should withstand small rain drops or snow falling through.

I didn't have one in for a long time, but the car is my DD and having it sit parked with some of the rain storms we get around here... I don't like that much water just pouring all over the engine. Although it will be back in the garage soon...

do something simple. that plastic was held by clips. try to mold some acrylic, and put it there. it will be transparent. at least for a while.

I was thinking of making a fiberglass panel and having it route the water somewhere better than onto the radiator. I have a Koyo rad, but don't want to shorten its life any. Everyone got me thinking though and it might be nice to keep it open to cool things off with the FMIC and 3rd gen 3S in there

I've seen your car and know how well you take care of it, so I value your opinion. I've been on the fence about leaving it open or putting in the rain deflector, but hearing your thoughts on it settles the issue for me. I'm going to leave it open and take advantage of the heat release it offers.
