OBD confusion - 6G Celicas Forums

Hi guys,

I have a 97 ZR model (the Australian GT). I was under the impression that 96+ models were all OBD II, but maybe thats only in America?
I was recently trying to find the OBDII port on my car but i couldnt... I looked all under the dash around where the pedals are, on the pass side but nothing.
Under the hood theres the diagnostics box infront of where the pass sits (driver for the us guys) i have attached a photo of it.




Is this the OBD I port where I connect the E1 and TE1 terminals and look for flashes inside the car?

Can anyone post a pic of their OBDII port just incase im having a seniors moment?

Weird... yes that is the OBDI diagnostics box....

You should look for manufacturing date on the label that's on the driver-side door jamb I believe (if it's there)

I have that same box in my 1997 Celica GT but I also have the OBDII port right under my steering wheel in front of the gas pedal. Mine is a USDM model though.

I have that same box in my 1997 Celica GT but I also have the OBDII port right under my steering wheel in front of the gas pedal. Mine is a USDM model though.

I believe OBDII was a US thing, it's worth looking into. In the meantime, see if you can check your codes with the Diagnostics box via the OBDI check-engine-light dance.

Isnt TE2 for the advanced diagnostic mode?

There is really ALOT you can do with the OBD diagnostic port. It takes a couple thousand dollar computer though to plug into it and run a full diagnostic scan. But there are some neat tricks you can do with paperclips and a multimeter.
The manufacture date is OCT - 97 so its def 96+.
I guess i can try calling toyota and see if they know anything.
So if i join the TE1 and E1 terminals on the diagnostics box if the engine light starts flashing theres no OBDII, and if it doesnt flash the port will presumably be somewhere and im just blind?

Ill give the terminal joining a go when i get home today
they all still have the breakout box, but you'll also have a port under the dash. Even camry, corolla, and avalon still had those till about 98-99ish.

Ok ive been really busy so only got a chance to check it today. I bridged the TE1 and E1 ports in the Diagnosis box in the engine bay and the engine light was flashing in the car (with the no codes flash luckily). So i guess that I do have an 97 OBDI car.

Anyone else from outside America that can test this?

I have a post from like a month or two ago talking about trying to bridhe the TE1 an E1 ports but it didn't work. Until one of the members told me mine was an obdII so I bought a obd2 reader and the reader worked. Mine is an OBD2 and bridging didn't work for me. My car is a USDM 1997 Celica GT.

For what it's worth, my I pull codes from my BEAMS using the diagnostic box and we know the BEAMS is a '97+ engine.

Edit: A quick Google search yielded the answer that OBDII requirements were only mandatory in the US in 1996. Other countries didn't require this.
