Timing Belt - 6G Celicas Forums

Topic #83803 9 posts Started by xxgetbackupxx
Well its about that time again... I have never changed it before I have a 97 st 7afe. Anyone have a write up on how to change it or a guide? Any special tools needed to make it go easier? I won`t be doing it alone I have a friend whos very experienced in cars but he hasn`t really change it before as well. Any help/guide/ or advice would be much appreciated! Thanks All
look in the stickys, i have a guide on how to build a 7A-FE. its alot more information to what you are doing, but its an excellent reference for where things are. you basically have to set the timing at TDC. remove the passenger engine mount so the engine can be lowered (tilted) then take the crank pulley off, then the belt covers. just watch what you take off then put it back on in order.

Stickys? Where is that?
Its super easy on the 7afe, it probably took zfjohnson and I less than an hour to change his. The 5sfe is WAY harder to change.

The only advice I can think to give you is that you need an air impact hammer and a relatively large air compressor to break the crankshaft pulley bolt loose. If you dont have an impact hammer, place an appropriately sized socket(6 sided is preferable over 12 sided) and ratchet on the bolt and slip a piece of pipe over the end of the ratchet. Now brace the pipe on the end of the ratchet against the ground or the control arm and have an assistant crank the starter. The starter will spin the engine clockwise which will break the bolt loose and back it out. Anyways, its come in handy for me a few times
oh yes the starter trick, Us Supra guys use that trick too

This is why I like this forum.......
But yeah, an impact gun, pulley remover, torque wrench, breaker bar, pry bar and a decent jack...it'll make life so much easier. Although you can get by with far less, and if its your first time doing this, take your time and do it right. After a few of these you'll be able to do them with little to no effort.
yeah specaial_edy did it like it was changing the oil, swear to god lol.
