Whistling noise at acceleration? - 6G Celicas Forums

Topic #84108 23 posts Started by HectortheRican
Lately, I've been noticing an odd, whistling noise when I accelerate. Only from a cold start and it's more prominent in the lower gears (I'm accelerating normally, I'm not hauling ass). It always seems to die down when I shift gears and it starts to pick back up when I continue to accelerate. Any ideas, guys?

... supercharger?

In retrospect, I pretty much described a supercharger, huh? laugh.gif Hahaha but seriously. It's a weird noise.

Hahaha - I couldn't resist. laugh.gif

Would you consider it a definite whistle? Or maybe a high pitched squeal?

KAOS|THE PROGRESSION - SLOW & STEADY|PARTING OUT- it ALL must go!|
Not quite a squeal, like the squeal that the accessory belts make when they're cold/bad. Just more like a whistle that increases in frequency as the engine speeds up. The whistle goes away at higher gears and when the engine warms up.

Do you have an aftermarket intake? they can whistle.

Have you messed with anything recently? could also be a vacuum leak. Anyway you could make a video so we could hear it exactly?

It'll be difficult to record because it only happens when I'm moving. I've had my Injen SRI for almost 2 years and this is the first time, so I don't think it'd be that. Maybe there's a very small hole in the filter and that's what's making the whistling noise? I'll see what I can do about checking for vac leaks, though.

I have the same problem...stupid turbo...

On a more serious note:
likely just the synchros/gears in your transmission winding up and down. Viscosity of the tranny fluid will change with heat. Perhaps its time to change your transmission fluid.
My buddy had this problem before too in one of his cars, although it was all the time.
Turned out to be a bearing of some sort. I believe in his ac.

Really? Because I changed it, not even 6 months ago.

Start noticing it shortly after the fluid exchange?
I have that samw sound since i redone my intake
Do you have all the extra little ports on your intake capped off
an it could be your trans too mine does it but its only noticable in 1st an reverse

No, I changed the fluid in December and I noticed this whistle a few days ago.

Yep, I've got every little hole capped off.

I don't have the AC on when I hear the whistle.

I have the same thing lately. But only under wide open throttle and at revs above 3800. I could never figure it out, but an ac bearing sounds like it might be the cause. So I'm gonna check it out soon
On idle, try pushing in your clutch pedal. I assume the sound disappeared when you accelerated cus you pressed in the clutch for that moment. if the sound disappears its your Throw Out Bearing on your Tranny.

I'll give that a try. Sometimes I hear it at idle and sometimes I don't. I've been needing to flush my PS fluid, which I will do as soon as I get time this week. Do you think bad PS fluid could cause a bearing in the PS pulley to get squeaky/whistle-y?

if your p/s pump was bad, you'd hear it all the time even parked but if anything more louder when you turn. if it were the pulleys or bearings are a little bit more distinguishable and since those pulleys move all the time as long as the motors running you would be able to tell easily cus you could just stand in front of the car and listen to it. in your case, you described it basically everytime you pressed the clutch when you shifted and cold start.

the only thing else i could tell you is maybe you have a bad ground wire for sounds, cus that follows acceleration also. did you work on anything electrical?

I use to hear it from a small crack in my rubber intake piping

I used to have a similar problem on my old 7A... though I think it was from this long crack along my exhaust manifold (at least that was the only thing I could contribute it to... could have been intake, never thought of that... its easy enough to check the exhaust manifold though.

If that's the reason, it must've jostled loose because I haven't done any significant electrical work that could cause something like that.

My SRI has an aluminum pipe and all the holes are plugged.

Possibly... I have an eBay SS header, so it could be cracked. But if that was the case, wouldn't I be smelling more exhaust fumes? Because I haven't noticed anything like that.

It sounds like you have either a bad tire causing this problem or a wheel bearing that is failing.
I have the same problem but I didn't always have it. i believe its just the tb breathing but also think the iac port plays a bigger part.
never had the problem until i cleaned out my tb and iac, and i had the ****tiest intake hose that leaked like crazy but it didn't whistle before. sometimes i run without the hose on tb and u couldn't convince me its anything else.i think it has to do with like the air splitting between the butterfly and iac port.
im not positive but i stand by the theory still. maybe this helps in some sort of way
