So I went thru the stickies and the ere is a thread that says great info for anyone looking to swap a 4th gen 3sgte. But doesnt give me any info that Im specificly looking for, which is how much easier or harder is it to swap a 4th gen 3sgte than a 3rd gen. Is it still plug n play for a JDM celica or or is there more stuff that needs to be done, and last note does it drop right in or do modification need to be done?

The mechanical parts are the same as it would be with swapping in a 3rd gen. Its the wiring that usually gets people. But i think Dr. Tweak does a conversion harness so yea that could be a possible route. Also why the 4th gen yo? Its kinda known that the rods are kinda weak compared to the 3rd gen version.

Really just keepin an open mind and looking at different options for this swap as far as budget, cost effectiveness, and penny value.

3way is right. its the same exact thing as swapping in a 3rd gen, the differneces you will find will be the In routing the intercooler piping (though slightly) and in particular the wiring.

4th gen is the newer motor, spools a little quicker, however, has weaker rods, and less aftermarket support/knowledge about that motor specifically. i'd say that the 3rd and 4th gen have about 85-90% things in common.

if you plan on going big power, dont get a 4th gen. if you just want a nice quick fun to drive car, go for a 4th gen. If I could do it over again, i'd probably go 3rd gen.

4th gen SEEMS cheaper because you are forgetting to add 500$ for a wiring conversion, and probably another 300 for an intercooler and piping.
With a 3rd gen you get a really good intercooler out of the box and the wiring is something most people can do on their own. 3rd gen is the engine to get, hands down.

Tweaks is pretty pricey. Found a guy on the MR2 boards that does it for about half the price. Will find out shortly whether or not the work is as good as Tweaks is supposed to be. Man, the special's been out of commission since March and it's almost all done. The suspense is killing me!!

4th gen is the way to go, im sorry i didnt build a forged 4th gen instead of rebuilding my 3rd gen.

stronger block, coil on plug, side feed intake,

not sure about the gen 4 crank, a gen 3 crank or 5sfe reground if you want a stroker build can be used if the gen 4 is found to be weaker

once you have je pistons and eagle rods (or even a set of 2nd hand gen 3) , that should be all the weaknesses covered

as for the turbo, once you've had a garrett ballbearing turbo theres no going back

3rd gen is only better if you plan on squeezing out power out of the stock internals.

your last statement is true! the rods are THE WEAK point of the 4th gen....

other than the 4th gen being newer, and not as likely to have been beat on (being that they are USUALLY automatic trannys) id say that... wait... i just talked myself into liking the 4th gen more again! lol

Yea 4th is Great. Weak points can be changed out in due time ...(I mean after all a person going bigger and hard either way is gonna tear the engine apart to install modified stuff)

you get the 4th and its pretty much new compared to the 3rd 2nd and 1st.... this is not 2002 -2004 when this forum stated so I mean its time to move one allot of that stuff about the 4th can be worked around

Congratulations on getting your awesome new 4th gen motor! We here at Prime Performance in Stanhope, NJ install these 4th gens all day into mr2s, rav4s and celicas and they are just fantastic motors. Nothing can spool with a stock 15b turbo gen4. It is a true joy to drive and my gen4 mr2 race car does embarrass a good number of my Porsche buddies and their $100,000 dollars monsters. The caldina manual has proven very difficult to find even for me with my contacts in Japan. However, if you have any problems I would be happy to help you with some decision making and advice from my years of installing and racing these motors.
