Engine identification - 6G Celicas Forums

Topic #84432 13 posts Started by mrgignac
Having some trouble identifying the engine in my 96 ST. The car ran perfectly until a friend of mine changed the plugs, now runs terrible. I then remembered When i purchased the car, the owner had said the engine was swapped out. i looked around the entire engine until finding a small tab under the alternator that read:

2T1BB02E2
TC167804

Ive googled it a bunch a times and looked for toyota engine codes but didnt see anything like it. any help would be appreciated.
does the intake manifold say anything on top of it? if not its probly a 7afe as opposed to a 5sfe.
both with short rams, but you get the idea.
5s-fe
7a-fe

Take a few pictures of the engine and post them here. We should be able to identify it
Yes a picture would be the easiest way of identifying what engine you have.

Are you sure your friend got the plug order correct, this is why me and me only works on my cars with the occasional extra set of hands when necessary.

heres a pic, and we checked to make sure the plugs were on the corresponding number on the distributor. im thinking the guy at the store looked up plugs for a 96 celica and i heard this engine might have been from a toyota wagon.

i appreciate all of the help guys, im so bad with cars

Thats a 7A-FE engine. So at the store you'd be looking under Celica ST 1.8L. Not sure if the years matter.

smkr3w, so i must have the right plugs cuz that's what they looked up for me and the plugs come gapped, has got to be wires or distrib then? thnx for your expertise

Everything on this car is so old, i wouldn't be surprised if we busted something while changing the plugs. i had bought a set of the 1.8 wires but still had the same problem so i returned em not knowing if i had the right engine.
What exactly is it doing? Check engine ligt on?

What plugs are you running? NGK is always good and what most japanese cars call for. I would check the gap on the plugs anyway as just a slight bump/tap can mess with the gaping.

there were nkg's in it, but they were old and blackened. i got bosch platinums and now i dont know if a cylinder isnt firing or a wire is busted. it runs really rough. ive never had a problem with the engine in this car until now, it ran perfectly until the plugs got changed

the engine light does come on now as well.

If the check engine lights on pull the codes that could very well be the source of atleast part of the issue. So you've got a miss fire ya say? pull the plug wires one at a time while it's running and if you pull one and it changes nothing you've atleast found the cylinder that is missing. I'd definitely pull those codes though.

Bosch Platinum could be your problem, try some plain copper Denso or NGK plugs.

The emmissions label under the hood should have the factory spark plug listed on it. It is usually on the underside of the hood near the latch.
