s51 trans. - 6G Celicas Forums

Topic #85366 6 posts Started by DaTerrorist
recently my 96 celica st blew its motor due to the moron who owned it b4 not changing the oil for probably 90k miles -.-, so i figured a 3sgte swap would be ideal biggrin.gif. got it all bolted in and wiring is about to be sent off to either tweak or 1 of the mr2 guys that does the same harness work for about the same price (cant remember his name off top of my head). Anyways i noticed the axles dont match up with the transmission i plan on running in it. If anyone who has done this swap could help it would be much appreciated. Heres wat ive got going on:

- 2nd gen 3sgte
- really late 80's 3s trans

ive searched and searched but could only come up with confusing answers. Ive gathered that the transmission is a s51 and yes it bolts up to the motor with any hassle, i know i need a clutch disc for that tran. with pressure plate and flywheel for the 3sgte (already taken care of). now i just need to know wtf to do about my axles

5s axles are the easiest and probly cheapest way to go. hopefully you wont be putting much more then 300hp through them.
now are the 5s axles the same on the mr2 as they are on the 6g celica (assuming both are the 5s motor/ trans etc). if they are there is a guy up the street who has some hes willing to part with for pretty cheap and they look basically brand new.
s51 has the longest gears out of the s53 and s54.

The S51 transmission is the weakest. the S54 I know has dual syncros on every gear or something to that effect. I saw this because I member here took out his 5th gear on the S54 and replaced it with a S51 5th gear. He noted that the 5th gear from the S51 only had one syncro.

Not to worried about the syncros as of now all i need is the trans to work lol. As far as the axles tho mr2 and celica 5s axles are they the same?
