replacement engine or save this one? - 6G Celicas Forums

Topic #87747 8 posts Started by Mercedes831
I have a 94 st stock motor and everything. however the engine like all Toyotas it got an oil leak 3 years ago I think I've tried random leak fixers here and there and nothing's fixed it completely and now I do believe my head gasket is blown or is about to go the car runs rich blows white smoke out the pipe and over heats super fast so its a pretty safe bet I think. my question is do you guys think its work fixing the motor up and having a shop look at it or just tell them to replace the whole stupid thing I'm guessing their both going to be expensive. oh! the motor has 200,000+ miles to if that helps thanks for reading!
Sounds like you have the perfect opportunity to learn how to change a headgasket.

Fourtunately you have the ST, I wouldnt recommend removing the head on the GT for a novice.

A full rebuild isnt a bad idea, but it will cost you 5-10 times what the head gasket alone will

do you have any tips on how to or should I just go look around the web more? the st is easier? do you think I could hold off on a rebuild then
ohh and also am I going to need to take out the motor to repair a h.g. I know you usually don't have to but celicas pile everything up so much I'm not sure
To just do the head gasket, you can leave the motor in. Some of the other seals are more tricky, but you could remove it and have access to everything you need.... but def cheaper to remove a motor and replace some seals and a head gasket before you destroy the motor than it is to replace it.
first off where in CA are you? secondly a full rebuild is what i recommend. yes you could get back on the road by just doing the HG, however any other seal could go at any time. i have a very detailed guide on how to rebuild the 7A engine in the stickies. read it over and over. if you do all the work the rebuild will cost you 700 bucks
