Replacing your 7A-FE engine - 6G Celicas Forums

Topic #88303 6 posts Started by Smaay
Ok i discovered and learned a lesson on replacing a 7A-FE engine in your ST Celica. Pre ODBII engines did NOT have a crank position sensor. Im assuming that in 96 is when Toyota added the crank position sensor. SO.... if you ever have to replace your engine and you go out and get another 7A-FE from a corolla or earlier Celica. It will do the job, but you have to replace the oil pump. Now you can use your oil pump if you want to but i suggest getting a new one, and while you are at it, a new water pump and timing belt since you are in there. Oh that reminds me, you also have to use the crank gear for the timing belt from the 96+ car. it has larger teeth for the sensor to pick up on.

94 oil pump, no crank position sensor.

96+ oil pump with crank position sensor mount.

ill add pics of the crankshaft gear tonight to show the difference there.

I don't mean to offend, but this has been known for quite some time and has been posted here before (and Toyotanation). The distributors are also different, no slots to adjust base timing and electronically different I think as well. There's three or 4 different intake manifolds and 2 different exhaust manifolds as well. Also possibly two different heads coinciding with EGR or non EGR.

yes this intake manifold is "shaped" Vs the 94 intake manifold. the EGR was the same. I should have checked on the crank position but then again i like learning the hard way. ill never for get now.

And of course let's not forget about the JDM/Russian/Asian 7A-FE with TVIS. Not that you should ever run into one of those here though....
